All About Tropical Rain Forests By: Skye Salamat & Jaelyn Lammers

What is a rain forest? A place where we get many resources. A warm, humid, and green place with rich soil. Where more than half of the animals in the world live. Plus, it’s a place that gives us oxygen.

Location of Rain Forests Most of Brazil is a rainforest. These are continents that have rainforests: South America, North America, Australia, Asia, and Africa.

Emergent Layer Trees grow into the Emergent layer which is the top layer of the rain forest.Trees grow into the Emergent layer which is the top layer of the rain forest. Many types of birds and butterflies fly in the Emergent layer. Many types of birds and butterflies fly in the Emergent layer.

Canopy Layer Bugs, birds, and tarantulas live near the trees. There are many leaves up in the Canopy layer because it is the top of the trees. Sloths and snakes live in the canopy layer.

Understory Layer Macaws, snakes, and spiders live on the understory layer. The understory is the second layer in the rainforest. Lianas swing off of the understory layer.

Forest Floor Tree porcupines, ocelots, and jaguars live on the Forest Floor. T The rafflesia is the biggest flower ever and grows on the forest floor. There are a few ponds in rainforests.

Deforestation The rainforest is a great place, but it is currently being cut down. These are the reasons : Reason 1: people are mining for gold and more metal. Reason 2: the countries that have rainforests are poor. Reason 3: towns are growing. Reason 4: farmers are using that land for cattle grazing.

People of the Rain Forest Not many people live in the rainforest. Living in a rainforests gives you free food and rubber. Also living in a rainforest can be very dangerous because leopards, jaguars, and many other animals can hurt you.

The Cycle of a Rafflesia Step 1: A rafflesia starts as a seed. Step 2: The rafflesia turns into a bud. Step 3: The rafflesia turns into a flower.

The Story of Dilton Once, in a rainforest, an ocelot, Dilton was captured by a wildlife hunter. The hunter, Al McPoppy, was fairly poor. He lived in a hut as small as three bushes and as high as one bookshelf. Al also stole 11 macaws, 50 kinkajous, and three baby tapirs. He sold a leaf that looked like Abraham Lincoln and used that money to buy a pet store. Al thought he could get even more money if he sued a man and tried to frame him for bringing an ocelot and trying to blame Al. So, that is what Al did. Al put Dilton into an innocent man’s (Dennis Doppin) house. Al sued Dennis for stealing an ocelot from the rainforest which he didn’t. Al gave proof by showing the ocelot in Dennis’s house. Dilton had a tag attached to him that said that 1

2 It was property of the McPoppy Pet Shop. Dennis was innocent. Al had to go to jail for his life and had to pay a fine of 900,000 dollars to Dennis. Dilton was lucky because he was released back to the rainforest. He thought he would never see the rainforest again. Afterward Al never paid his fine (not even when he turned 50-he was 28 at that time.) Dennis got a court job. Dilton passed on this story and so did the other generations of this ocelot family.
