Word Processing Strand 4

What is Word Processing? Using Keyboarding skills to produce documents such as: Letters Reports Manuals Newsletters A tool to enter Letters Numbers Words Phrases A tool to Enter Edit Print Save

What is Desktop Publishing? Uses graphics to produce products such as brochures, flyers, and newsletters.

Advantages of Word Processing Easy to make changes to document (compared to typewriter) Information can be moved later Easily saved and stored

Disadvantages of Word Processing The user must be skilled in computers and word processing software

Vocabulary File: A document created and stored on a computer. Menu Bar: A section of a window that allows you to select options and commands. Cursor: A flashing line which indicates where data will appear as you type it in. Open: to “retrieve” a file Save: to store a file Print: to put what is on the computer screen on paper.

More vocabulary Desktop: The background on the windows, menus, and dialog boxes on a PC Tool bar: A section of the window with pictures and icons that represent shortcuts to options and commands for the word processor Document: A file created on the computer Text: Words on a page (not pictures or images)

More Vocabulary… Print Preview-allows the user to view the document as it would appear when printed. WYSIWYG-What You See Is What You Get Page Setup- allows the user to change the margins and page orientation Spell Check-compares the words in a document to a database of correctly spelled words. Thesaurus- contains a database of synonyms which can replace commons words in a document.

Page Orientation The way text is printed on a page Portrait (default): The page is taller than wide. Landscape: The page is wider than tall.

Keyboard Homerow Keys: ASDF:GHJKL; Left Hand Home Keys ASDF Right Hand Home Keys JKL;

(You will memorize the entire keyboard.) Proper Posture and Technique--continued

Keep your eyes on the copy (what you are typing from, not the keyboard and your fingers) Place your fingers on the center of each key with the fingers slightly curved Strike keys firmly and release them quickly Do not worry about correcting errors when working on building speed Proper Posture and Technique--continued
