Modernism in the 1920’s By Christian Atkins and Jack Ryan

Definition of Modernism A style of architecture, art and literature. Uses ideas that are different from the past ( Merriam-Webster ).

Who and When ❖ Modernism came into American culture in the early 1900’s and continued throughout both of the World Wars ❖ Much of the growth from Modernism was in the 20’s ❖ Many Americans approved of the new ideas and growth ❖ However, many writers did not like the “new business culture” as the result of Modernism

What and How ❖ “Modern Art is a representation of the world that is less than literal,” ( Art ) ❖ During the 20’s, photography had just been invented so there was no real need for paintings, much less realistic ones, ( Art ) ❖ Modernism created a new way of thinking and seeing the world

What is Surrealism? ❖ A section of Modernism ❖ “The true function of thought, defying all logic and lies outside any normal or moral interpretations of life,” ( Art )

More Modernism ❖ Modernism continued throughout the World Wars ❖ By the end of the 1st World War, America was a superpower country, and what better time to begin a new way of thinking ❖ America began to grow and advance ❖ This America gave the world some of the greatest inventions ➢ Light Bulb ➢ Telephone ➢ Automobile

Modernism and Jazz ❖ Created a new way to express our feelings ❖ Jazz began in the 20’s, so the country was prime for a new type of music ❖ Succeeded because of Duke Ellington and Louis Armstrong ❖ Led to the development of other music
