SAETA Teacher Refresher Morning Saturday 13 February English Studies: School Assessment (70%)

Four to six responses Critical reading, paired text, two single texts, study of poets A broad range of tasks is best Shared Studies: What do we have to do again?

Keep it relevant to the text type Move well beyond character and plot Keep sociological comments in the classroom Integration is the goal in comparative tasks And poets not poetry Secrets of the Shared Studies (30%)

Choose the right texts Novels and films are most popular But select from the full range of text types Just make sure the texts are narratives with identifiable language techniques Individual Study: A few tips to keep students on track (20%)

Some text choices are disasters Be careful a student doesn’t double up a shared studies text Frame a good question that leads to an argument Keep paragraphs tight and focused What else to bear in mind?

Show skills in the chosen text type Just analyzing a text in class can be boring for everyone Feel free to use contexts beyond the classroom Use one oral to stretch students in terms of audience Text Production: time for fun…

They shouldn’t be responses to texts Don’t double up topics or text types If going abstract—which can be great—consider including a writer’s statement to help moderators discern the choices made by the student Stay within word limits, etc., so students don’t get SACEd Written text productions: what’s there to know?

Bundle work into the three assessment types and use three plastic sleeves. A fourth plastic sleeve can be used for the LAP The most important thing? Clearly label student tasks (with SACE number and name) Postscript: best way to organize folios?
