OAK/LE CHENE/QUERCUS It is a tree or shrub in the genus Quercus of which about 600 species exist on earth. Leaves: They are spirally arranged, with a lobed margin in many species; some oaks have serrated leaves or entire leaves with a smooth margin. Flowers: They are catkins, produced in spring Fruit: It is a nut called an acorn, borne in a cup-like structure known as a cupule; each acorn contains one seed (rarely two or three) and takes 6–18 months to mature, depending on species.

MAPLE/L’ELABRE CHAMPETRE/ACER It is a tree growing to 10–45 m in height. Others are shrubs less than 10 m tall. Leaves: They are palmateveined and lobed, with 3-9 (rarely to 13) veins each leading to a lobe, one of which is central or apical. Flowers:They are green, yellow, orange or red. Fruit:The distinctive fruit are called samaras or "maple keys". These seeds, or 'whirlybirds,' occur in distinctive pairs each containing one seed enclosed in a "nutlet" attached to a flattened wing of fibrous, papery tissue. They are shaped to spin as they fall and to carry the seeds a considerable distance on the wind. Children often call them "helicopters" due to the way that they spin as they fall.

THE HAZELS/LE NOISETIER/CORYLUS They are a genus of deciduou trees and large shrubs. Leaves: They are simple with double-serrate margins. Flowers: They are produced very early in spring before the leaves, and aremonoecious, with single-sex catkins. Fruit: It is a nut 1–2.5 cm long and 1–2 cm diameter, surrounded by an involucre (husk) which partly to fully encloses the nut.

SWEET CHESTNUT/LE CHATAIGNER/CASTANEA SATIVA It is a medium-sized to large deciduous tree attaining a height of m with a trunk often 2 m in diameter. Leaves: They are oblong-lanceolate, boldly toothed,16-28 cm long and 5-9 cm broad. Flowers: The flowers of both sexes are borne in cm long, upright catkins.. Fruit: It is a brownish nut.

COMMON BIRCH/LE BOULEAU/BETULA Birch species are generally small to medium-size trees or shrubs. Leaves: They are simple and may be toothed or pointed. Flowers: They are catkins. Fruit: It is a small samara.

BEECH/LE HETRE/FAGUS It is a genus of ten species of deciduous tree in the family Fagaceae. Leaves: They are entire or sparsely toothed, from 5–15 cm long and 4–10 cm broad. Flowers: The flowers are small single-sex (monoecious), the female flowers borne in pairs, the male flowers wind-pollinating catkins, produced in spring shortly after the new leaves appear. Fruit: The fruit is a small, sharply three–angled nut 10–15 mm long.
