National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention Dr.Tadashi Nakasu, Dr.Hitoshi Taguchi, Mr.Nobuyuki Handa, Dr.Tai-Young Yi, Dr.Yuichiro Usuda An Integrated Approach for Assisting Local Disaster Preparedness through Web Service : How to combine research findings with local disaster management ■ Research Purpose: Establish a database which will provide a web service for local disaster preparedness practices. Research findings of natural science, engineering, and social science from universities and research institutes and so on all over Japan are to be integrated and combined within the data base. This web service will facilitate the research finding distribution in the proper form to be utilized by local disaster managers in Japan. This research project is funded by MEXT(Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) in Japan. ■Main Functions and Use Case: ■Features : 【 1 】 Local Disaster Managers and Researchers are Connected. 【 2 】 Each Local Disaster Managers are Connected. 【 3 】 Researchers, Practitioners, and Supporters are Connected Advantages for Researchers -Contributions to local communities through own research findings. -Know the problems and challenges in local disaster management practices. -Develop and expand new research fields. Advantages for Local Disaster Managers -Discover the problems solution strategy. -Build the connection between experts and other related persons. -Assist handing over task for business continuities. Academic Society Universities Institutes Research Findings Challenge ・ Needs Local Government Voluntary Organization NPO Researches Practices Collection and Arrangement of Challenges, Needs, and Methods on Local Disaster Management Practices Collect the information on challenges, needs, and methods of local disaster management practices by conducting questionnaire and interview surveys and holding participatory events. Once users point the area on the map of the website, hazard and risk information of the area are shown. Also, the characteristics of the areas are indicated with the estimated and recommended challenges, solving methodologies, and practices for the local communities. ■ Perspectives and Challenges: We will proceed the development of the prototype, then evaluate and inspect the web service usability by field tests. Our present challenges are gathering more public attentions and practical applications. ■ Advanced Example Practices for Research Findings Distribution Fukushima Ward, Osaka City / Unexpectedly heavy rain Oosaka Univ.
