 FDR New Deal Programs

National Labor Relations Act NLRA  NLRA banned unfair practices in the workplace. It helped workers to improve safety, work schedules and wages.  Workers legally join Unions.  Established the National Labor Relation Board to enforce the laws.  Recovery, due to government act or legislation.

Civilian Conservation Corps  CCC of 1933, also known as “Roosevelt’s Tree Army.”  Environmental program put 2.5 million unmarried men to work maintaining and restoring forests, beaches, and parks.  Civilian – young men between the age 18 – 26  Protecting the environment.  Lasted 1933 to 1942, discontinued due to World War II>

Agricultural Adjustment Administration  The AAA gave help to the nation’s farmers  The AAA developed a plan to pay farmers to leave some of their land unplanned. That way, the total crop would be lower, and more in balance with the needs of the nation’s consumers.  This problem is called overproduction, and the AAA was created to help solve it.  Recovery program lasted to 1938.

Rural Electrification Administration  The REA was created in 1935 to bring electricity to rural areas.  Farmers were to create electricity cooperative companies. It used the money they invested to finance the construction of generation and distribution facilities and power lines to bring electricity to farms.  In 1930s only 10% of farms had electric power. By % of rural areas had 25% electricity.

Federal Deposit Insurance Corporatio n  FDIC was formed by Congress to insure bank deposits up to $2500.  This insured people their money was insured, protected, if the bank went out of business.  No bank depositor has lost their money since 1934.

Social Security Act  This act established a system that provided old-age pensions (money) for workers, survivors benefits for victims.  The system gives a monthly check to the surviving spouse and children if a worker dies or becomes disabled.  Social Security is one of few New Deal programs still around today.
