Research Outlook from Discussion in 2015 TTFRI
NASA: Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (NPP) FORMOSAT-7 (Taiwan-USA, scheduled for 2017/2018) Japan Himawari-8 Satellite, more channels with higher spatial and temporal resolution Multi-parameter Doppler radars, cloud radar, UAV Model completeness, cloud microphysics, air-sea interaction, air-land interaction, data assimilation
Discussion Conclusions in 2016 Observations Cloud radar Observe cloud evolution before and after precipitation Fill data gap between lidar (pre-development) and Doppler radar (with rainfall), but need data accumulation Targeted by TTFRI for acquisition in TEAM-R mobile Doppler radar Have accumulated several years of data for use in research Can adjust mission and scanning strategy according to plan Can apply and acquire data from NCU radar group website Can provide some processing of data during case period for easy use through collaboration TTFRI Joint observation experiment: 2 radars, TEAM-R, UAV
Discussion Conclusions in 2016 (cont.) Observations SCS-YMC Winter Olympic in South Korea in 2018 Pretrial run in early 2017 (two months) and Forecast Demonstration Project (FDP) in 2018 Among an integrated array of observational platforms Paid for (man power, transportation) by Korea Other equipment: 3-D scanning Doppler lidar
Discussion Conclusions in 2016 (cont.) Modeling: Shortage in computational resources Rapid growth in problem size of model simulations Resource from NCHC may not meet some special needs (cycling runs, real-time runs, long wait time, job saturation) An increasing problem for most PIs Possible short-term solution Allocate some resource in NCHC, or through TTFRI, to serve the PIs with special needs in computational resources Establish a service project that needs both large storage and computing capacities (to tackle certain issues) Need to speak out to let our problems known
