Research has linked gum disease to serious health problems such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. 2 Gum disease is more than just gums. Several research studies have suggested that gum disease may be associated with other health issues, including heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and memory problems and pregnancy problems with premature babies. 3 What are your Risks for Gum Disease? Your risk may increase depending on: age, gender, tobacco, and family history. Bleeding gums are not healthy gums. 4 Gums bleed when they are swollen or infected. Bleeding gums are a sign of disease. When your gums bleed the bacteria from the swelling enters your blood stream and can harm your heart.
