The Curriculum Person-centred curriculum - Students have a person-centred transition plan and a personalised curriculum to help them achieve their goals Broad curriculum based on the Foundation Learning areas of vocational studies, personal and social development, and functional skills Award, Certificate and Diploma courses from Entry level up to Level Two within the areas of: self-care and daily living skills; travel and community access; health, fitness and citizenship; land-based studies; catering and hospitality; functional skills (English, Maths & ICT); arts; sport, recreation and work skills This curriculum considers ‘Preparing for Adulthood’ as our priority, supporting learners to reach their desired outcome through teaching and learning.

What Darlington College offer Next Steps provides a supported learning environment for young people working towards post-16 qualifications and employment. Next Steps provides courses for young people at Entry Levels 1-3 and up to Level 1 for the work based programmes. Offer both college based courses and courses that include work placement elements. Start on a college based course where you develop your skills for independent learning and living as well as starting to develop employability skills through volunteer and enterprise projects. Vocational subject, for example, Construction, Health and Social Care, Horticulture, Hairdressing and Catering. The work based courses students will further develop your skills for work and will aim to undertake a real work placement to be able to develop these skills further. We offer a wide range of support to ensure that you have your individual needs met, both in the classroom, around the college and on work placement should it be required

What are the benefits? Darlington Borough Council, Dilston College and Darlington College have worked in partnership for the last 3 years developing bespoke provision for young people with special educational needs. This has increased the number of young people with SEN participating in education and greatly improved the local offer with Dilston providing Independent living skills, Independent travel training, work experience etc from their base house in Darlington. DBC have been able to tailor provision, In line with SEN reforms and preparing for adulthood for young people with more complex needs. Through the partnership we have been able to offer programmes delivered jointly by Dilston/Darlington college. This has enabled young people to make the transition and progress into full time education at Darlington College. We have also commissioned Dilston to provide programmes for complex young people requiring a more specialised package, this has allowed young people with complex needs to live and learn and develop their skills in the community. Darlington BC has benefited greatly by having a broader range of provision available in the community.

Students thoughts Enigma – I love to do Maths and English at college because I learn a lot. I also enjoy making things in construction and learning new things. At Mayfair road I enjoy cooking, enterprise and shopping, I really enjoy being with my friends Matt - At college I enjoy Maths and English as its fun. At Mayfair road I like learning new things such as cooking, cleaning, DIY and Independent travel. Sophie – I like learning English and learning about different shapes, I love cooking at college and doing enterprise. At Mayfair road I have learnt how to do household tasks and tasks such as painting. I am making crafts for charity which I enjoy
