Screening Questions
Screeners Save Time Money
Two main problems with “to-the- point screening” 1.Asking sensitive questions. 2.Giving too many clues
Avoid using sensitive questions as initial screeners People won’t answer your survey. More people will need to be contacted.
Don’t give clues of who you want to interview. It gives people an easy escape. People will give false information. It causes the sample to be self- selected and not random.
In order to avoid direct and “to- the-point” screening problems, use Opinion questions Indirect Questions
Use opinion questions to build rapport. Do you think that employees should be allowed to smoke in ALL workplaces, SOME, or in NO workplaces?
Use Indirect Questioning To survey the relationship between pet owners and holders of major credit cards: We’re doing a brief lifestyle survey tonight and we’d like to know how many refrigerators and televisions you have in your home? Do you have a VCR? Do you have a dog or a cat? Do you have more than one car? Do you have a major credit card?
Conclusion Direct screening questions help to lower costs, but they can invalidate a survey’s results. Use indirect screeners to get more valuable results.
