Beginner readers need to learn to handle more that one set of information. They need to learn to hold on to the message being processed while looking for and checking other information.

Reading words and understanding are two separate processes.

It is difficult to comprehend the meaning of a text in which many of the words are not accurately identified. Likewise, limited knowledge or lack of understanding of many of the words will limit comprehension however accurately the words are pronounced.

Strategies to identify words while reading text: Blending together the individual sounds represented by the letters in words. (sounding out) – this is the most important during early stages Noticing and blending together familiar spelling patterns (more advanced) Recognising printed words as whole units (by sight) As children read the same word accurately several times it eventually becomes stored in memory as a sight word.
