Maximizing Achievement in Science: Working together to raise standards

Targets. So what! Evidence from research gives clear information on the factors which make schools and classrooms effective in promoting student achievement. These factors include: a shared vision and aims; high expectations of what each student can achieve; concentration on learning and teaching; monitoring of individual student progress. “The odds of hitting your target go up dramatically when you aim at it.” We will be reviewing some targets for some students prior to Xmas. These targets will form the basis of all teaching, monitoring and intervention. They will be reinforced at school and (hopefully) at home.

Your role as Parents / Carers

It could easily feel like this … Half of school pupils suffer from stress because of ambitious parents (... and schools) “The youngsters cite ambitious parents, as well as schools, as the source of the overwhelming pressure to achieve good marks and exam grades,” Dr Maggie Atkinson (Mail, 2011).

The difference parents can make Within school factors 10-20% Home factors % School age children spend 80% of their waking hours (including weekends and holidays) outside of school time.

Working Together School and Home We can provide: 1.A modular / controlled assessment overview. 2.Quality during lesson time. 3.Intervention within the school day (where possible). 4.Information – letter, text, website, etc. You can: 1.Support the process as far as possible. 2.Be proactive.

What can you do to help?
