INFSO-RI Enabling Grids for E-sciencE Policy and International Cooperation Fotis Karayannis EGEE Second EU Review 7 December 2005

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 2 Outline NA5 overview NA5 update since last review –Major Achievements Issues Plan until the end of the project

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 3 NA5 Overview NA5 = Policy and International Cooperation Policy-related activities –Supporting the eInfrastructure Reflection Group (  e-IRG: Working “for the creation of a framework for the easy and cost-effective shared use of electronic resources in Europe”  Pursued mainly through a series of policy related White Papers and Roadmap documents, along with related Workshops International Cooperation activities: –With other projects including “concertation” activities (i.e. interacting with a cluster of related projects – forum for exchanging ideas) –With other geographical regions (e.g. North America, Asia- Pacific) –With standardisation bodies (GGF et al)

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 4 NA5 structure

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 5 NA5 update – Policy activities Cooperation with and support to the e-IRG (Luxembourg presidency - 1 st semester 2005) –NA5 coordinated the Support Group i.e. the e-IRG “virtual office” –Policy and technology experts from EGEE contributed to e-IRG workshops (rapporteurs or area leaders) and documents, often as sub-editors –The EGEE project director presented the project’s views to the e-IRG community as an observer in the e-IRG meetings Supported the planning for UK and Austrian presidency (2 nd semester 2005 and 1 st 2006) events –UK e-IRG meeting only (no workshop, white paper) –Planning for Austrian presidency

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 6 NA5 update– Int’l cooperation Conferences-workshops Participation in major conferences and workshops –Supercomputing 2005 (SC05), Seattle, USA, November 2005  Extended collaboration with OSG, NAREGI, KISTI, China and Taipei  Participated in the Multi-Grid Interoperability meeting (major Grid projects around the globe)  EGEE was more visible this year!  Applied for an EGEE + related projects SC06, Tampa, Florida –iGrid2005 and GLIF (Global Lambda Integrated Facility), San Diego, September 2005 –OECD Global Science Forum in Sydney, September 2005 (OECD: Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development)  Discussions focused on policies –Internet2 event in Philadelphia, September 2005  Monitored US efforts (NSF Middleware Initiative, Networking initiatives) –GÉANT2 launch event in Luxembourg, June, 2005  Interfacing with the research networking community; from countries including India and South Africa

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 7 Int’l Cooperation - Focus on Asia-Pacific Achievements  Many resource sites from Asia-Pacific have been integrated into the EGEE infrastructure (India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, Taipei) Also contributing to m/w testing and pre-production service  EGEE visits and invited speeches, EGEE training events Japan:  EGEE former project director gave a the NAREGI annual conference  Technical discussions on project collaboration and interoperability (e.g. cross job submission) during the 3 rd EGEE conference in Athens  EGEE tutorial hosted by National Institute of Informatics (NII) in Japan  NAREGI-EGEE interoperability SC05 –Future plans  Follow-up of Multi-Grid interoperability GGF 16 in Athens  On-going discussions about cross participation in major NAREGI and EGEE events  Participation of KEK (major HEP institute in Japan) in EGEE-II under way

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 8 Int’l Cooperation - Focus on Asia-Pacific China and Taipei:  Specific Support Action project has been pushed forward: EUChinaGrid: Starting 1/1/2006 (24 months) – led by INFN, Italy  Grid and EGEE tutorials in Taiwan (March-April 2005)  EGEE Workshop and gLite tutorial in parallel with the APAN (Asia Pacific Advanced Network) meeting Participants from China, Korea, Singapore India:  EUIndiaGrid: Submitted in the September call Korea:  Mutual transfer of technology know-how is planned under EGEE-II

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 9 Int’l Cooperation - “Concertation” “Concertation” - cross project efforts: Successful EGEE/LCG/OSG working groups extended to other projects: –MiddleWare Security Group (MWSG)  Extended to DEISA, DILIGENT, GÉANT2, GRIDCC, SEE-GRID –Joint Security Policy Group (JSPG)  Open session held during the 4 th EGEE Conference in Pisa Participation and contributions to the Grid Technology days events - Grid Research (Grid Technologies Unit – F2) Participation to the TERENA NREN-GRID workshops, Amsterdam, May and October 2005  Topics such as AAI and Reservation of Networking resources for Grids During 3 rd and 4 th EGEE conferences:  Plenary talks by DEISA, DILIGENT, NEXTGRID, SEE-GRID  EGEE gLite training for other projects  Demonstrations open for other projects  Related projects session in Pisa! 12 Projects present, identified cooperation areas

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 10 Related Projects

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 11 Related projects – Cooperation areas Standards

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 12 Pisa Related Projects Session Recommendations Working groups are a good solution for many areas but not for all –Needed when technical work involved but other forms of collaboration essential (e.g. discussion fora, bilateral cooperation) Priorities should be set - forming too many groups might be counterproductive –Training and standards were highlighted, amongst others EGEE will prepare a report and distribute it to the corresponding mailing list formed General observation: –The EGEE conferences are a major driver towards concertation efforts, but should not exclude other events with broader scope

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 13 Issues and Future Plans NA5 survived a complete management change from 1 st review: –Fotis Karayannis: New NA5 Activity Leader (May 2005) –Joanne Lawson: New NA5 Support Officer (Sept. 2005) Policy activities –No White Paper planned by the UK e-IRG presidency  The effort could be put forward to an Austrian presidency White Paper International Cooperation activites –“Concertation” and project collaboration after Pisa is progressing faster –Cooperation with other regions progressing Standardisation –NA5 has launched an inventory of EGEE’s main areas of interest, including GGF, W3C, IETF, OASIS and ad-hoc efforts in order to track participation and keep up momentum  NA5 is only supporting standardisation activities (not driving them) –Standardisation was considered key for cross-project collaboration during the Pisa session

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 14 Future plans: NA5 calendar e-IRG UK presidency meeting: December 2005, London Research Infrastructures Concertation meeting, 14 December 2005, Bordeaux –Organised by DANTE, seeking more wide concertation (e.g. network- grids)  Areas: Monitoring and Performance Optimisation, Resource Management / Allocation, Security and AAA, Interoperability Issues GGF 16, February, Athens Gridcoord workshop, February 2006, Linz EGEE User Forum event, 1-3 March 2006, Geneva e-IRG workshop+concertation meeting, April 2006, Linz –Effort to combine it with the 3 rd TERENA NREN-GRID workshop (Spring 2006) EGEE Review/EGEE-II kick off meeting, May 2006 e-IRG Austrian presidency meeting, June 2006, Vienna –Austrian presidency White Paper, Roadmap to be presented –Cooperation with e-IRGSP

Enabling Grids for E-sciencE INFSO-RI Fotis Karayannis, Policy and International Cooperation 15 Summary NA5 has accomplished its major goals: –Extending collaboration with other regions such as USA and Asia-Pacific –Established significant presence at major conferences/workshops (such as SC05)  Further plans for SC06 –Working on getting a good picture of EGEE contributions to standardisation  EGEE should further promote participation to standards –“Concertation” effort being formalised with working groups and discussion fora  Follow up at the last quarter! EGEE as an incubator for new projects!
