Writing Response
“Sink or Sail” Use Strategies to read and answer the questions. You will be in groups of 4 to create a “poster” for your question. Your goal is to get the answer correct AND match my rationale.
Correct Answer: B This answer choice provides the reason for including information about Jesse Martin in his argument that Laura is old enough to sail around the world by herself.
Correct Answer: H Stereotype- a widely held but fixed and oversimplified image or idea of a particular type of person or thing. Saying that teenagers make irrational decisions is a fixed idea of that group of people.
Correct Answer: B The danger of sailing is mentioned by both Luka and Maya. Proof- Paragraph 4 and 10
Correct Answer: H Proof- Paragraph 7 “And the risks won’t be as great for Laura because she will have the safety boat shadowing her.” Using context clues around the word, “shadowing” let the reader know that a safety boat will be following Laura throughout her voyage.
Correct Answer: D Giving examples of the boat crashing, giant waves, and storms help to stress the potential danger.
Correct Answer: H Giving the reader information about Laura’s experience, the type of boat she will use, and her plan allows the reader to understand that she is well-prepared for her voyage. Process of Elimination- F: BOGUS- it’s the opposite; G: That’s only one part of the table (experience); J: That’s only one part of the table (plan)
Correct Answer: D Process of Elimination: A: BOGUS since she is competing against Michael Perham’s record; B: BOGUS since showing that other kids have sailed around the world solo strengthen Laura’s case; C: Wrong because the world record is based on age not length of time; D: best answer choice
