Challenge for Today CrEaTIvity

What is Creativity? Creativity is the ability to see the same things as everyone else but think something different. Creativity involves the translation of our unique gifts and talents into something that is both new and useful. Creativity is an important element in finding new ways to do old things and ways to do things yet undone. 3

Creativity Creative thinking skills Expertise (knowledge) Motivation Expertise = knowledge (technical, procedural or intellectual) Creative thinking skills determine how flexible and imaginative people approach problems - do they end up with the status quo Motivation - where the solution is far more creative than the external reward e.g. money Components of Creativity

Creativity Defined To further refine our definition, we must distinguish between three related, but unique characteristics. 1.Intelligence is the ability to think and learn. 2.Academic achievement results in a degree after years of lectures, exams, and theses. 3.Creativity is the ability to redirect a line of thought into new directions.

So what makes creative people creative? If we could look into the minds of creative geniuses, what would we see? Joy of discovery Questioning Desire to interrelate Tolerance of ambiguity Curiosity Sense of challenge Playfulness Inquisitiveness Willingness to take risks Positive discontent Desire to see things differently Desire to learn Willingness to experiment Wonder

Creative thinking Creative Thinking refers to the ability to form new combinations of ideas to fulfil a need, or to get original or otherwise appropriate results by the criteria of the domain in question.

What is an Illusion? il·lu·sion (î-l¡¹zhen) noun 1. a. An erroneous perception of reality. b. An erroneous concept or belief. 2.The condition of being deceived by a false perception or belief. 3.Something, such as a fantastic plan or desire, that causes an erroneous belief or perception. 4.Illusionism in art. Latin root of illusion is illudere which means “to mock” Optical illusions mock our trust in our senses Suggest that the eye is not a passive camera; rather, perception is an active process that takes place in the brain and is not directly predictable from simple knowledge of physical relationships
