Comparative adjectives مقارنه الصفات

The comparative form of an adjective compares two things. For example, the weather.

Or two persons.

To make comparative adjectives some rules must be followed. قوانين المقارنه

To form the comparative we add er at the end of the adjective and than. e.g : fast faster than small smaller than The car is faster than the bicycle Jerusalem is warmer than London in July.

Two forms of comparative mean the same thing. شكلين من اشكال المقارنه لهما نفس المعنى,وهما : - er than _ not as as 1) a- Sami is taller than Ahmad. b- Ahmad is not as tall as Sami. 2) a- Jerusalem is wetter than London in February. b- London is not as wet as Jerusalem in February

Examples comparative Adjectives large larger largest The first apple is large. The second apple is larger than the first. The third apple is not as large as the first apple.

*Write the sentence again with the same meaning.Use not as…………as ? e.g: Jerusalem is warmer than London in July. London is not as warm as Jerusalem in July. ************************************************** a- London is wetter than Jerusalem in August. …………………………………………………………………………….. B- In Jerusalem, July is warmer than June. ……………………………………………………………………………..

Practice Ask and answer with two forms. Use the graph in student book page 62. in………….,Jerusalem or London? wetter drier warmer cooler Which is e.g.: which is warmer in February, Jerusalem or London? 1-in February, Jerusalem is warmer than London. 2- in February, London is not as warm as Jerusalem. e.g.: which is warmer in February, Jerusalem or London? 1-in February, Jerusalem is warmer than London. 2- in February, London is not as warm as Jerusalem.

Conclusion We make comparative sentences by adding er + than e. g: Our house is larger than your house. We use not as ……………..as to give the same meaning of er + than. e.g: The mouse is smaller than the cat. The can is not as small as the mouse.

Thank you
