Assessment for Years 1, 3, 4 & 5

Goodbye levels! As you are aware, this year levels have ceased to exist for children in years 1, 3, 4 and 5. Next year this will also apply to years 2 & 6.

Programmes of Study The children have now been assessed according to their understanding and performance against the new Programmes of Study.

What are Programmes of Study? The Programmes of Study are the statements which make up the content in the new National Curriculum.

For example… read and write numbers from 1 to 20 in numerals and words add and subtract one-digit and two-digit numbers to 20, including zero recognise, find and name a half as one of two equal parts of an object, shape or quantity

Age-related Expectations The aim is for the children to become secure in the majority of the Programmes of Study by the end of the year. If this is the case they will be assessed at being at ‘age-related expectations’.

Ongoing Assessment Each child has been assessed against all of the Programmes of Study in Reading, Writing and Maths throughout the year.

Best-fit Judgements Teachers have made ‘best-fit’ assessment judgements on each child 4 times throughout this year, using the terms entering, high entering, developing, high developing and secure.

Spring Term Reports In April, parents received assessments for their children for Reading, Writing and Maths. Teachers reported as to whether children were ‘working at age-related expectations.

Entering 1 I show some understanding when supported (verbally or written). I rarely apply to my independent work. Developing 2I show that I can sometimes get it right during independent work, but not always. or/and I get some questions correct under test conditions. or/and When taught a POS in a lesson, I can reflect that I have some understanding of this in my book, having worked independently. Secure 3 Under test conditions, having not just been taught the POS, I get majority of questions correct (only making careless mistakes). or/and I show that I have achieved the POS through independent work in my books, without having just been taught it. Exceeding 4I can apply the POS independently, also showing reasoning.

End of Year Assessments On 17 th July, parents will receive their child’s school report containing the end of year assessment judgements for Reading, Writing and Maths. These judgements will tell you whether your child has met the expected standard for the end of the year or not. Some children may also have been assessed as working below age-related expectations or exceeding age-related expectations.

Below Age-related Expectations If a child is not secure in the majority of Programmes of Study relevant for their year group, then they will be assessed as working below age-related expectations.

Exceeding If a child is secure in the Programmes of Study relevant to their year group and have exceeded the majority of them, then they will be assessed as exceeding age-related expectations. This is a difficult assessment to achieve as expectations are now higher than with the previous National Curriculum. In order to achieve ‘exceeding’ in writing, a child must be secure in Programmes of Study relating to basic skills (handwriting, punctuation)
