Internships School of Business Internships provide an opportunity for students to link theory with practice in real world experiences. It enables a student to develop important skills which cannot be taught in the classroom. These experiences vary from working on special projects for the interning agency to learning about the human motivation process in an organization. It also teaches what is expected in terms of professional experience.

Internships School of Business Benefits to Students: An opportunity to gain new skills and perspectives Deeper understanding of your personal strengths and career goals The chance to expand your academic knowledge within your field of study Improve your interpersonal skills Edge on competition Exposure to new cultures, new environments and new ideas The opportunity to expand your professional network

Internships School of Business An internship is the 1 st step in your professional career – it can also be an interview for your 1 st job. Successfully completing your internship can lead to a job offer upon graduation. Plan your internship – make sure you think about it when preparing your schedule~!

Accounting, Finance, Project Management, Marketing, Sales, Many sources to search – not the obvious Reach out to person in firm that does what you want to do. Ask for an interview Make an appointment to see Director of Interns What resources do you have available?

Internships School of Business This is your career – you are driving it ! We can help with ideas and support ! We can help by strategic thinking and think through your options. It is up to you!

Internships School of Business Internships can be for academic credit or not for academic credit. Internships can be paid or unpaid A paid internship would be best for the student. Non-paid internships provide opportunities for students to develop their skills in professional situations. (During the academic year 70% of the internships are unpaid and 30% paid. We are working to increase that %) These are not mutually exclusive – and they do not depend on how you find your internship!

Internships School of Business Internships for academic credit: Integrates academic and work experiences for enhanced learning Tailored to student and sponsor needs Amount of credit is based on hours worked (To earn 3 credit hours you need to work 115 hours with the sponsor) You may enroll in between 3 and 12 credit hours Grade is included in your GPA This does not count as a 300 business elective If you take an accounting internship up to 6 credit hours can be included in your 33 credit hours of accounting requirements. It may also count as part of your professional experience Registration is handled by SOB

Internships School of Business The academic component of the program includes: Each individual is assigned an academic advisor Weekly activity notes Alternative week group discussions Midterm and final sponsor evaluation Written and oral report at end of semester

Internships School of Business Requirements: Junior or senior standing – 24 credit hours in major Cumulative GPA 2.85, 3.00 in major. Everything is handled though Director of School of Business Interns

Internships School of Business In order to take an internship for credit or to have your resume distributed by SOB we need the following Application Resume Degree evaluation (WEB CAPP)

Internships School of Business The process and timeline: Student applications for potential internships through School of Business distributions need to be submitted by November 1,2012 Resumes and applications provided to sponsors beginning October 25, 2012 Potential sponsors will contact you to set up an interview If you receive an offer you need to notify Director of Interns Intern Contract and Registration – Ongoing

Resume What do you hope the resume does for you? or in other words – “What is the outcome you expect?

Internships School of Business A resume is required. It is suggested that you meet with Career Services to develop one. The purpose of a resume is not to convey your life story but to generate interest from an employer. It should be concise and in proper English Focus on your skills – personal and academic Work experiences you have had – what is unique what did you learn from it. Involvement in school and other activities A PDF format is preferred
