 Nebraska Action Coalition Project Goal #2: Build a leadership trajectory program targeting the 40 under 40 honorees (representing gender, geographic, and ethnic diversity), based on State Implementation Program 1 grant assessment data incorporating the initiatives of mentoring/coaching, advanced leadership education, and recognition.  Currently the Nebraska Action Coalition has 4 regions in Nebraska with leadership teams. The Nebraska Action Coalition has successfully engaged the state in identifying 81 honorees of the “40 under 40 Nurse Leader” awards. The Nebraska Action Coalition has initiated the process of developing mentor-mentee dyads.

 Opportunity Statement: Nebraska is a diverse state consisting of both urban and rural regions. The Nebraska Nurses have the opportunity to enhance the engagement of the “40 under 40 Nurse Leaders” in engagement with mentor- mentee coaching, and future leadership on boards and decision making bodies.  Jonas Project: The Jonas Scholars are going to help individualize strategies to enhance engagement of the 40 under 40 Nurse Leader Award recipients and the mentor-mentee dyads.

Region West Lori Schoenholz MSN, RN, Sr. Director of Clinical Services at Great Plains Regional Medical Center Carolyn Jones MSN, RN, Chief Nursing Officer at Box Butte General Hospital South Region: Carol Wahl MSN, MBA, RN, Vice President of Patient Care Services at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital Manuela Wolf: Master Health Care Administration, RN, Chief Executive Officer at Harlan County Health North Region: Tammy Brown RN, Director of Nursing at Brown County Hospital East Region Dee Ernesti MSN, RN, Faculty at University Nebraska Medical Center Pam Agee-Lowery MSN, RN, Nurse Manager at Douglas County Youth Center

 Key Findings ◦ Leaders in Regions are directly mentoring both their 40 under 40 recipients (if applicable) and mentoring their own leadership team of nurses within their organizations ◦ Some Regions had limited 40 under 40 award recipients due to changes in leadership ◦ Regional Leadership Committee Members have organizational leadership programs ◦ Regional Leadership Committee Members identify challenges of finding time to promote NAC beyond their own organizations and organizational meetings

 Best Practices ◦ South Region: Good Samaritan Hospital uses tele- conferencing to support both clinical education and leadership development of Critical Access Hospitals connected with their organizations ◦ West Region: Panhandle Nursing Leadership meets quarterly with Regional West Medical Center CNE to support Critical Access Hospitals for shared leadership experience. ◦ East Region: Faculty incorporates leadership skills in all nursing course work to begin plant the seeds early. ◦ North Region: Promote leadership development through participation in internal decision making bodies

 Best Practices ◦ All Regions: Have leadership training and programing within their organizations ◦ NAC representatives leading local meetings to orient to NAC and IOM goals.

under 40 Leadership Award Recipients East: 77% West: 2% South: 12% North 7% Generational Cohort Millennials 28% and Gen Xers 71% Most of 2012, 40 under 40 award recipients were Gen Xers from the East and South Regions.

Under 40 Leadership Award Recipients East: 78% West: 4% South: 12% North 2% Generational Cohort Millennials 40% and Gen Xers 58% 40 under 40 award recipients were more evenly distributed but most are Gen Xers from East Region
