 Health – combination of physical, mental, and social well-being that affects everything about you

 There should be a balance of your physical, mental/emotional, and social health  Physical Health – how well your body functions  Mental/Emotional Health – about your feelings and thoughts  Social Health – getting along with others

 8-10 hours of sleep a night  eat nutritious meals and drink 8 cups of water a day  engage in minutes of physical activity a day  avoid the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs  bathe daily, and floss and brush your teeth every day

 It’s a reflection of how you feel about yourself, meet the demands of your daily life, and cope with problems  enjoy challenges that help them grow  accept responsibility for their actions  have a sense of control over their lives  can express emotions in appropriate ways  usually can deal with life’s stresses and frustrations  generally have positive outlooks  make thoughtful and responsible decisions

 a deep-seated sense of meaning and purpose in life  doesn’t mean you belong to a religious group, though it could mean you belong to a spiritual community

social network includes family, friends, teachers, and other members of your community  seeking and lending support when needed  communicating clearly and listening to others  showing respect and care for yourself and others

 Wellness – overall state of well-being; total health  comes from making decisions and practicing behaviors that are based on sound health knowledge and healthful attitudes  maintaining wellness means keeping a balance among the 3 components of health  Health is dynamic  Health fluctuates on a continuum (sliding scale)  Chronic disease – an ongoing condition or illness

 Heredity – all traits and properties that are passed biologically from both parents  Environment – the sum of your surroundings  Attitude – the way you view situations  Behavior – YOU CAN CHANGE THIS  Media & Technology

 Physical environment  Neighborhood and school safety  Air and water quality  Availability of parks, recreational facilities, and libraries  Access to medical care

 Social Environment  Made up of all the people around you – family & peers  Peers – people of the same age that share similar interests

 Cultural Environment  Can be ethnic, community, or nation  Culture – collective beliefs, customs, behaviors of a group

 Media – the various methods of communicating information  Technology – the way media is delivered to people (radio, television, Internet, etc.)  Not all health messages and sources are valid. On the internet, look for HONcode (Health of the Net Foundation), which is dedicated to improving the quality of health info on the Net.

 Risk Factors – actions that can potentially threaten your health or the health of others  The CDC has identified six (6) risk behaviors that account for most deaths and disability in those under the age of 24  Cumulative Risk – related risks that increase in effect with each added risk

 Tobacco use  Unhealthy dietary behaviors  Inadequate physical activity  Alcohol and other drug use  Sexual behaviors  Behaviors that contribute to unintentional injuries and violence

 Prevention – taking steps to keep something from happening  Abstinence – a deliberate decision to avoid high-risk behaviors  from tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs  avoid many negative physical and psychological consequences  avoid legal consequences  from sexual activity never worry about unplanned pregnancy no difficult decisions with teenage pregnancy not worry about STD’s free from emotional problems with sex and relationships

 the personal habits or behaviors related to the way a person lives  getting 8-10 hrs sleep each night  eating a healthy breakfast  eat a variety of foods  being physically active minutes each day  maintaining a healthy weight  avoid tobacco, alcohol, and other drugs  abstain from sex

 Health education – provide accurate health information and teaching health skills to help people make healthy decisions  Healthy People 2010 – nationwide health promotion and disease prevention plan designed to serve as a guide for improving the health of all people in the US

 aims to promote health and prevent illness, disability, and early death  Goals increase quality and years of healthy life remove health differences that result from factors such as gender, race, education, disability, and location health disparities – differences in health outcomes among groups

 Promote the best possible health in order to end preventable death, illness, injury, and disability  Eliminate health disparities  Make wellness a way of life and enhance quality of life for individuals and communities  Promote healthy places and environments

 individual’s capacity to obtain and understand basic health information and services, and to use these resources to promote one’s health and wellness  A critical thinker and problem solver  A responsible and productive citizen  Self-directed learner  Effective communicator
