Room 36 News May 9, 2014 Mrs. Sweeny Weekly News Important Dates: Sunday May 11 th – HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!! Monday May 12 th – MSP (math) Thursday May 15 th – MSP (reading) - Fun Run Pledges DUE Friday May 16 th – Class Party! Thursday May 22 nd – Fun Run! Thursday May 29 th – PTA Science Fair MSP T ESTING Students are doing a great job applying all their skills and strategies to show what they know. We should be SO proud of their writing work. Many students worked on their writing piece for the majority of the day – wow! We need to encourage our to show perseverance for the remaining test days. We just have math and reading left! Remember, if your child is absent on a testing day, it needs to be excused, and make-up days are embedded in our schedule. During the weeks of testing, please make sure your child:  Gets plenty of sleep  eats a healthy breakfast  arrives to school on time   wears comfortable clothing  Math In addition to continuing our work in fractions, we spent time this week reviewing math content we previously studied this year and have been working on applying our math skills and strategies to solving problems – all in preperation for the MSP. Students worked in partnerships and really stepped into a teaching/leadership role. It was so great to see students helping and encouraging one another. Makes my heart happy Reading We spent time this week reviewing reading strategies for fiction and non-fiction text. We talked in depth about the importance of paying close attention while reading so you are able to summarize or answer specific questions about the text. While your child is reading at home, ask your child to summarize what they are reading and to give evidence from the text. SCIENCE FAIR The annual PTA Science Fair will take place on Thursday May 29 th. Participation in this event is highly encouraged, however it is not required. We’ve had discussions in class about types of projects (collection, apparatus, demonstration, research, and experiment) in addition to project ideas (like researching Killer Whales, building a thermometer, demonstrating a chemical reactions, and so on). Students who choose to participate need to turn in their registration form as soon as possible, which will ensure them a science fair board. Students will be expected to work on this project at home, however my room is open before school as a place for students to work or receive support from me. Projects need to be completed and delivered to school Thursday morning. The class is really excited for this event!! They have some great ideas! C LASS P ARTY ! The class earned their Bravo BINGO Party, which we will celebrate next Friday the 16 th. The class voted on a day in PJs, pizza for lunch, AND time to enjoy electronics brought from home. So, your child has permission to bring in ONE electronic devise on the 16 th, like an ipad, ipod, or kindel, and will be able to enjoy it during our party! (Please note that the school is not responsible for these devises, so you need to be okay with your child bringing it.) Also, I would greatly appreciate if students could contribute a couple dollars toward our pizza lunch Thanks so much! I want to say THANK YOU for all the ways you made me feel special during Teacher Appreciation Week. I love working with such a great community of kids, family, and other staff members. THANK YOU!!!
