Thesis Holden’s initial confidence transforms into anxiety when confronted with women his own age, which suggests that he clings to his childish innocence yet still attempts to explore adult behavior.

Jane Gallagher as a Symbol Jane represents Holden’s paradox, she looks young and sometimes acts young, but is an old soul. Her checkers represent how Holden sees her as an unchanging part of her childhood. The adults around Jane represent how Holden views the adult world, as they abuse and hurt Jane.

Sunny: the Lost Child See Page 96 Chapter 13 Holden felt remorseful for Sunny because she had lost her innocence of childhood. See Page 95 Chapter 13 His idea of sexual intercourse was wiped away when he realized her innocence was lost, which he found unattractive.

Sally: Falling off the Cliff See Page 125, Chapter 17 Holden is attracted to her because he is a normal teenager with hormonal feelings However, he starts to drift away when he realizes that she has grown up and is not the same young girl as he remembers her. Go to Page 128, Chapter 17 Exemplifies his bipolarity in terms of how he feels about Sally. Holden first wants to marry Sally when he sees her, but when she talks to the man from Andover he begins to abhor her. Holden does not understand how she could want to leave the past, and therefore calls his hatred of Sally her "phoniness.” (See connection to Jane in beginning of Ch 18)

Jane: Innocence Retained, Somewhat Chapter 11: Holden likes Jane so much because he associates her with his childhood, yet she really represents the paradox of his character. Page 32-33, Chapter 4: Holden is afraid she had changed, doesn’t want to confront her. Page 80, Chapter 11: Panics when Stradlater might spoil “Old Jane’s” innocence

Universal Connection Love, across time and cultures, remains ever present yet relies on ability to relate for the depth of the emotion, as revealed by Holden’s love of Jane, with childlike qualitites. To have a deep relationship, at some level the two people must be able to connect emotionally. Not just clinging to innocence, but also clinging to someone who he can understand and vice-versa
