The Effects of the War on the Post-War World Social, Economic, and Political Effects

Lochnagar mine

British take out German position 1 st day at the Battle of the Somme Sound of blast considered the loudest man-made noise in history up to this point Said to have been heard in London!

The Somme was where tanks were first used In 4 months of war, 1 million men died. “Somme. The whole history of the world cannot contain a more ghastly word.”— -Friedrich Steinbrecher

Social Effects of the First World War Changes occurred because of the role women played during the war as factory and office workers. Women received the right to vote. Women exercised social and political power (ex. The Women’s Christian Temperance Union) Women also gained freedom in everyday social life (ex. changing ladies’ fashions)

Social Effects of the First World War Increase in urbanization (larger cities) led to more automobiles which led to suburbs. With the automobile came many social developments and the petroleum industry. Two notions from WWI (to kill the enemy no matter what the methods and to attack civilians and starve them into submission) caused negativity and pessimism.

Economic Effects of the First World War WWI was more expensive than anybody had ever imagined. Britain, the world’s major creditor nation, became a debtor nation. Most of the allies owed the United States considerable amounts of money. The German and Russian economies lay in ruins.

Political Effects of the First World War Europe’s international political system lay in ruins The alliance system, armed might, and the balance of power had collectively been unable to prevent the war or provide security. Russia became Communist.
