The Mother of Kyiv Rus cities Kyiv is one of the most ancient European cities. Its history dates back to 862. The population of Kyiv is over 3 million people. The city is situated on the high hills on the banks of the Dnipro river. It is one of the biggest rivers in Europe. Kyiv is famous for its golden domes of old churches. The oldest one is St. Sophia Cathedral. Khreschatyk is the main avenue of the capital. The Independence Square (Maydan Nezalezhnosty) became known all over the world because of the February events, known as “Maydan” Kyiv is beautiful in all seasons but it is especially pretty in spring, when the chestnut trees are blossoming. There is a beautiful Botanical Garden in Kyiv.

Monuments of Kyiv Among the places of historic interest is St. Sophia Cathedral – the unique masterpiece and the top of the creative spirit of the Ukrainian people. Kyiv-Pechery Monastery, another ancient monument, stands on a green hill above the Dnipro river and its sparkling golden domes can be seen from outside the capital. St. Volodymyr Cathedral, St. Andrew’s church, the Golden Gate, Vydubetsky Monastery, Askold’s Grave and many other ancient monuments attract attention of visitors.

Kyiv’s Theaters The first theater in Kyiv appeared in Kyiv- Mohyla Academy. There were ‘school dramas’ performed by the students and teachers. This theater influenced the culture of the country very much. Ivan Franko Theater is a center of Ukrainian drama, comedy, and musicals. The opening of the Opera theater in 1865 was an important event in the life of the Kyivites. The recently renovated Kiev Opera House presents very good opera as well as a broad repertoire of ballets.

Museums of Kyiv Lives of many prominent writers, poets and painters is connected with our capital. Such outstanding people as Taras Shevchenko, Lesya Ukrainka, Mykhailo Bulgakov, Maxym Rylskiy, Pavlo Tychyna and Mykola Gogol worked and lived here. Visiting these museums, we can get acquainted with the heritage of our country. Another museum to go to is the National Museum of Nature, where we can see remnants of ancient animals and plants and broaden our outlook in modern Biology, Botany and Zoology. Then you have to go to the National Museum of History to learn about the heritage of the Ukrainian nation from ancient days to modern life.

Syrets was first mentioned in chronicles in 1381: it used to be a village presented by Prince Vladimir Olgerdovitch to the Dominican monastery. In the first half of the 19th century Syrets became a part of Kiev. It was a farmland that gradually turned into the place for Kiev garrison summer camps quartering and military aerodrome.
