Sculpture & Clay

Skip about 5 pages in your APJ (three front & back-these are for your longest line project) on the next clean page, Leave a Space for your title Page: – Sculpture & Form: Experimenting with Clay – On the top of the next page write : – Sculpture & Clay Notes

The work we will start is sculpture. (write this info down) There are 3 forms of sculpture #1. additive #2. subtractive #3 kinetic Additive is when you put pieces together to build something Subtractive is when you have a material and you cut or chisel away to get the sculpture. Kinetic is moving sculptures

Kinetic are sculptures that move

What is clay? -Clay is a fine-grained natural rock or soil material that combines one or more clay minerals with traces of metal oxides and organic matter. - Clays are plastic due to their water content and become hard, brittle and non–plastic upon drying or firing

Clay Building Techniques Pinch: using your fingers to pinch sections into the shape you want. Slab Method: cutting slabs of clay and assembling them together to create your work.

Clay Building Techniques Coil Method: rolling clay into coils (or snakes) And then layering them to build the form you need.

Our project will be influenced by a folk art craft of the early African culture of the South & Southeast US, known as ugly mugs.

In the African culture there is a history of wood statues known as Nkisi figures. (Ke-Say) Nkisi means spiritual entity or objects in which there are manifested inhabitants of ones soul. It is believed that these figures housed the spirits of ancestors and other protective figures and they were used as grave markers, ritual objects, or by shaman. The hollow heads were sometimes filled with medicinal combinations. They were considered to house the power of the dead and were often very stylized and created with abstracted human features. In many instances there appearance was thought to help ward off evil.

History of Ugly Jugs We will watch a short video on the history of Ugly jugs

Video ucators/lessonplan/face-jug/ ucators/lessonplan/face-jug/

We will be making ugly mugs or ugly mini jugs

Your mugs will be “ugly” but must be created with good craftsmanship

Ugly mugs are still made today by Southern artists. These are some I viewed at an art gallery in Kentucky.

Your mugs/jugs will have ears, eyes, mouths, noses, and other added details. After they are bisque fired, you will glaze them. Try to be a bit more creative with your color ideas than the one to the left.

You will develop a front, side, and back view of your mug. This is to be completed in your APJ. The Title at the top of the page(s) “Ugly Mug/Jug Design” Drawings should NOT be small. They will have all the Details you plan to use And you will add color later.
