MHS STAAR/EOC Training for English I & II Writing & Reading

Test Procedures & My Responsibilities All tests must be administered in strict accordance with the instructions contained in the test administration manual.

Test Security & Confidentiality  Read your manual (available online & here)  All testing personnel must be trained  Sign in before leaving today  No viewing or discussing test contents before, during or after the test  You may not provide assistance, directly or indirectly, to students during the test (check walls and halls)  Do not change or ask a student to change an answer!  No person may duplicate, print, record, take notes about, or capture by any electronic means any portion of a secure test without TEA approval

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures  30:1 ratio  Walls and Halls – your responsibility  “Testing Do Not Disturb” Place sign on your outside doors  Seating Charts Every adult must sign in with times indicated First and last names for each student Document movement of students during testing Document date and test given

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures  Read what manual SAYS Also pay attention to the non-bolded details (p. 51)  Answer documents are pre-coded – No bubbling of name, birthday, gender, grade level, etc. Let’s beat 45% see handout  Dictionary/Thesaurus – available to all students for the entire test minimum requirement is 1:5 ratio  Manage time during the 4 hour STAAR/EOC tests using the provided script and record sheet

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures  Active monitoring – This is HUGE!!  Students must stay seated and may not talk while others are still testing  Remind students to record answers on answer document  Only students may erase stray marks No bubbling of name or demographic info

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures  No translating  No rephrasing  No assisting students  No discussing the test  No leaving the testing room without another trained person taking your place

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures  If students change testing rooms, trained adults must carry testing materials  Fire Alarms Exit building as usual Take care of testing materials  No electronic devices – store them in front of the classroom No Cell phones No iPods/MP3 players, etc No eBooks (Nooks, Kindles, iPads etc.)  After testing students may read or rest  If a student leaves campus, testing cannot be resumed

Ensure Proper Testing Procedures After Testing  After testing students may read or rest  Absolutely no electronic devices permitted during the 4 hour testing block IF all test materials have been returned to the main office, then students may quietly work independently on school work WITHOUT electronic devices.

Active Monitoring This is the most important thing during testing! Everyone is responsible for ACTIVE MONITORING Most frequently reported violations across Texas  accepting blank answer documents  Failure to detect/prevent student misbehavior

MHS Issues  Answer documents with student info bubbled on pre-coded docs  Backpacks/cell phones not placed in front of room away from testers  Testers seated too close to one another without dividers  Teachers reporting to duty late or not at all

Testing Irregularities Two types - Serious and Procedural Serious: must be reported to TEA Some examples are:  Directly or indirectly assisting students  Tampering with student responses  Viewing secure test content before, during or after test administration  Discussing secure test content  Scoring student tests  Duplicating, recording or capturing electronically secure test content

Testing Irregularities Procedural: must be reported to SBISD  Improper accounting for secure materials  Failure to actively monitor  Accepting blank answer documents  Failure to honor the 4 hour testing session  Failure to read the script in the testing manual  Failure to be trained

Testing Violations  If there is a suspected testing violation, report it immediately!! It is your responsibility to report test violations, better to be safe than sorry No one can give you permission to break testing rules!  If you are having difficulty with a student, report it immediately!!  Call Command Central at ext. 2542

Penalties for Prohibited Conduct  See page 19 (STAAR Manual) Restrictions placed on teaching certificate Reprimand Suspension of teaching certificate Cancellation of teaching certificate for a set term or permanently  Did you sign your oath this year?  Will you read your manual? “Orphaned Students”  Small groups of students whose teacher has been assigned to testing duty get orphaned during certain periods.  Unless told otherwise through from Jean Landry, these “orphaned” students need to report to the auditorium where attendance will be taken.  Remember relocated rooms means you and your students move to a different classroom.

We Need YOU!!!!  Study the Testing Duty/Assignment documents from Jean Landry for April  Study the Room Relocation sheet  ALL are impacted in some way  Know your role and responsibilities  Be prompt to your assigned duties  Alpha Teachers pick up test materials each testing day, prepare room for testing and wait for test administrator to arrive  Test materials may be returned by any certified teacher
