nla.gov.au/pub/gateways/issues/102/story06.html | mps-expenses.guardian.co.uk Crowdsourcing Improves Historical Newspapers In 2008, through the Australian Newspapers Digitisation Program (ANDP) and in collaboration with Australian state and territory libraries, the National Library of Australia made available an exciting service that provides free, online access to selected out-of-copyright Australian newspapers. The Australian Newspapers service has been available for over a year and gives users the ability to search and browse over 8.4 million articles from over newspaper pages dating from 1803, with more pages being added.Australian Newspapers Digitisation ProgramAustralian Newspapers By October 2009 over 6000 members of the public had already enhanced the data significantly by correcting over 7 million lines of text in articles, and adding tags and 4600 comments to articles. One exceptional user has corrected over lines of text in over 7000 articles. Join us in digging through the documents of MPs' expenses to identify individual claims, or documents that you think merit further investigation. You can work through your own MP's expenses, or just hit the button below to start reviewing. (Update, Fri pm: we now have a virtually complete set of expenses documents so you should be able to find your MP's)

and-cons-of-crowdsourcing The concept of a wisdom of the masses is …fanciful, and erroneous… A CW project such as this requires the reader/transcriber to not only decipher handwriting, but to have some sense of the verbiage of the times, the forms of address and even of the artifacts or implements that might be mentioned in the context of such entries… Crowdsourcing may provide interesting ethnographic lab opportunities, but is a lousy way to get anything done. One of the clichés that librarians are most susceptible to forgetting is "the perfect is the enemy of the good". Libraries are notorious for spending a huge amount of human labor to get their catalogue records perfect down to the precise placement of periods that frankly do not matter to comprehension or search but are dictated in the "standards". …the best argument: not that crowdsourcing saves time or resources but that it gets a larger community of people involved and interested. This could, in fact, be a key component to rescuing the humanities from oblivion: give more people access to and a vested interest in our work by inviting them to help.

User feedback: The Civil War diaries site is a great work: informative and easy to navigate. I'm 82, living in an Assisted Living complex in Wayne NE. I have time now to really enjoy Civil War history. Thanks for a great site! I got hooked and did about 20. It’s getting easier the longer I transcribe for him because I’m understanding his handwriting and syntax better. Best thing ever. Will be my new guilty pleasure. That I don’t even need to feel that guilty about. THIS IS SO SATISFYING.
