NAPLES

Naples was the capital city of the Kingdom of Naples from1263 until 1816, then in union with Sicily it was the capital of the Kingdom of the two Sicilies until the Italian unification in 1861.

The city is synonymous with pizza, due to its dish popular all over the world. The famous Pizza Margherita was created for the Queen Margherite of Savoy during her visit in 1889 and took her name. A strong part of Neapolitan culture consists of music, including the invention of the romantic guitar and the mandolin as well as strong contributions to lyrics and traditional folk music.

There are popular characters and figures who symbolise Naples, including the patron saint of the city Januarius, Pulcinella and the Sirens from the wellknown Greek epic poem the Odissey.

This land was inhabited and loved by men since the ancient times: the Greeks were so fascinated by its beauty to imagine that in these seas lived the Sirens, whose enchanting voice was impossible to resist. Not even the Romans resisted the myth, perpetuating the fame of its beauty and endless natural resources.
