Montgomery County Public Schools Forward, which was developed in partnership with Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) in Maryland, incorporates the best practices of MCPS and their district’s curriculum while balancing the needs of districts nationally. About Montgomery County  17 th largest school system in the U.S.  Highest graduation rate in the nation  Recipient, 2010 Baldrige National Quality Award

Research MCPS studied their high school graduates as they traveled to higher education tracking:  percentage of students who were accepted to college  percentage of students who made it to their junior year Back-mapped student success beginning in Kindergarten using 7 Keys to College Readiness  Results found that successful students were critical thinkers, creative thinkers and had developed academic success skills.

Implementation Services

Multi-Year Partnership Forward is built on a foundation of sustainability and includes a three-year implementation plan. Goal: move your school community from a stage where expert led support and scaffolding help drive the implementation to a stage where school leaders are confidently able to use the tools and resources by which to collaborate in self-managed ways.

Forward Curriculum

Program Organization written for the CCSS focus on critical thinking, creative thinking, academic success

Two Types of Integration Integrated Support for Teachers The goal is to encourage students to think critically and develop the habits of mind that are essential to college and career readiness. Integrated Content for Students The goal is for students to achieve academic success in the 21 st century.

Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS)

Scope and Sequence

Assessment Forward takes assessment beyond the “right answer,” helping teachers evaluate students’ critical thinking and reasoning.  Performance-Based Assessments nurture student success around key skills.  Content-area Formative Assessments measure student understanding of core subjects.

Professional Development Forward ‘s Professional Development is embedded within the program so teachers will have support during their implementation, not after it.  Product Orientation Courses help teachers familiarize themselves with Forward  Skills Courses help teachers understand the thinking and academic success skills  Just-in-Time PDF’s, videos and interactions  Foundational Courses support special student populations  PD for Assessment

Part Overview

Integration Guide

Weekly Planners Forward provides a library of Sample Learning Tasks rather than one prescribed lesson for each concept or topic.

Forward Flex Guide Teachers may elect to incorporate their own content in conjunction with the curriculum topics presented in Forward. Since every Sample Learning Task (SLT) within Forward has a closure portion that links back to the thinking and academic success skills, we recommend that any non-Forward assets also tie back. The Forward Flex Guide tells teachers:  How to locate Curriculum Concepts and Topics  How to read a Sample Learning Task (SLT)  How to incorporate custom content resources (i.e., your favorite book)  How to tie custom assets to the thinking and academic success skills

Key Distinctions  Developed in partnership with a leading school district.  A fully digital, K-5 integrated curriculum focused on key critical thinking, creative thinking and academic success skills.  Services-a broader solution by allowing teachers to balance curriculum planning, classroom management, student assessment, and professional development. Everything is in one place.

Impact on Teaching and Learning Perceived Impact of Teachers Using Forward:  Pilot teachers showed gains in their levels of preparedness for teaching math, science, and social studies, integrating thinking and academic skills across the curriculum, and meeting the diverse needs of learners.  Teachers also showed an increase in the extent to which they were prepared to use educational technologies in the classroom. Perceived Impact of Students using Forward:  Pilot teachers indicated that their students appeared more engaged when they used Forward.  Teachers also reported that students’ higher-order thinking/cognition skills were positively impacted as a result of using the program.

Technology Requirements Forward runs on the Pearson SuccessNet Plus (PSN+) platform. The requirements link will provide an acceptable user experience: Students can access content online and view animations on their computer. However, because Forward was designed to function as a teaching and planning tool, it works best in classrooms equipped with a teacher-ready computer with internet access and either a projector or interactive whiteboard.
