IDIOMS

What does idiom mean? A group of words whose meaning is different from the meanings of the individual words.

Why Should We Learn Idıoms? To communicate in a foreign language we can take definitions from a dictionary and construct basic sentences but sometimes we need to take words or group of words and extend their meanings beyond their literal significance. Therefore, we have the creation of idiomatic expressions or idioms. For the student of English as a second or foreign language, the use of idiomatic expressions reflects progress from a basic level of English into an advanced level. Through idiomatic expressions, we see more deeply into a culture that is representend through language.

To Have Butterflies in Your Stomach In English, if we’re very nervous about something we have to do, we can say "I have butterflies in my stomach". For example : When I have to take an exam, I have butterflies in my stomach so I forget everything I know. I always have butterflies in my stomach when I go to meet a woman. In Turkish, it means etekleri zil çalmak.

Lend Me Your Ear In English, if you want someone to pay attention to you and listen to you carefully, you say lend me your ear. For example: As a teacher, I often warn my students to lend me their ears in the lesson. Lend me your ear Francesca, I am talking to you here! In Turkish, it means dikatlice dinlemek, kulak kesmek.
