Steps for Writing a Children’s Picture Book

The Concept Robots Dump Trucks Ballerinas Aliens Princesses Super Heroes Fantastic Animals

Be Aware of Page Breaks Remember that two pages will be showing when you read the story to a child! Make “page turns” interesting, surprising, etc.

Don’t Rhyme unless You Rhyme REALLY WELL This isn’t really original, BUT if you rhyme really well, it is acceptable. Otherwise, just make it INTERESTING!!!!

Keep It Under 500 Words Young children like more illustrations, less words. Keep their attention by not being over-wordy.

Don’t Lecture If your story has a “moral”, that’s great, but you don’t need to LECTURE! Remember your audience!!!1

Read Picture Books Familiarize yourself with lots of picture books to help you along the way. READ, READ, READ!!!!!
