Little Gems We are part of the infant phase- Little Gems Year 2 - Mrs Inhester- Diamonds - Miss Law- Sapphire Year 1 - Mrs Varley- Ruby - Miss Stephenson- Emerald Our phase leader is Mrs Coe We have a team of assistants assigned to our phase to support all learning.

Pastoral team We have a pastoral team within our school (Mrs Bellas) Their role is to support parents, children and teachers with any issues relating to the children’s general wellbeing Their role is also to monitor attendance and make home visits.

Reading at home Reading books will be changed on Mondays and Fridays. May be changed more frequently when children have read individually to the teacher. Reading comments book – please add a comment when you have read with your child. Books wont be changed unless a comment has been left. Make time for regular practice – short bursts may sometimes be best! Enjoy reading times together. Encourage children to talk about the book eg look at the pictures, the characters, where the story is set. Ask them questions about what they have read. Give reading a purpose – read labels, street names, recipes etc. Join the local library for extra reading practice! Bug Club – school reading scheme that can be accessed from home (e- reading)..

Reading in School All children take part in guided reading /shared reading once a week. Phonics is used as the prime approach to reading – sounds are discussed before starting the text. Individual readers are listened to as often as possible. Sight words for reading/spelling

Phonics Phonics is used as the prime approach to reading and writing. We are about to begin a new phonics programme this year- Read, Write, Inc. Phonics test at the end of Year 1- they will be tested on all sounds learned from Reception to year 1. This will be done through reading real and ‘alien’ words. This ensures that the children know and are able to blend all of the sounds.

Writing at home Provide children with opportunities for writing e.g. a shopping list, birthday cards/invitations, etc. Have an exciting selection of writing materials readily available. Be a writing model – write alongside your child. Remember that reading and writing are closely linked. If your child has stories read to them regularly, this gives them ideas of what they could write about themselves. Read your child’s writing with them and discuss it. Be aware of them spelling phonetically and praise for doing so. Encourage good basic skills, e.g. holding the pencil correctly and making sure that letters are formed correctly. Whole school handwriting focus.

Writing in school Linked to the topic e.g. an information text about animals. Progress- Adjectives, connectives etc. Lots of practice on sentence construction e.g. using microphones, washing lines etc. Handwriting practice.

Maths at home Create opportunities for children to use Maths at home. Shopping trips, car journeys. Play games and puzzles – eg Snakes and Ladders encourages children to use a 100 square correctly. Look for different shapes at home or on the way to school and talk about them. Look at clocks, calendars. Talk about dates. Cooking – quantities and timings.

Maths in School Practical methods e.g. using objects/ numicon for calculation. Number lines and 100 squares. Counting in steps of different numbers e.g. 2s, 5s and 10s. Problem solving Making it fun – using games, including outside area provision. Group targets linked to mental maths e.g. number bonds to 10 and 20, and doubles up to 10, focussing on quick recall.

Homework Reading books twice a week Spellings every week to be learned and then tested on. Learning Logs will be sent out once or twice every half term. These will be challenge or question based and FUN! Allows creative opportunities linked to the topic e.g. ‘How many different light sources can you find in your home?’ Encourage your child to do as much of their homework as they can Parents can support

Encouraging good behaviour Praise Celebration assembly Afternoon tea Class target and reward Reflection time- follow up discussion. Further reflection during playtime- follow up discussion. Referral to a member of pastoral team or to Mrs Coe.
