THE ORIGIN AND VALUES OF THE RENAISSANCE

THE ORIGIN OF THE RENAISSANCE A “rebirth” of Classical art, learning, and views of the world.

It began in Northern Italy in the 1300s. Florence, Milan and Rome were important cities of the Renaissance.

WHY DID THE RENAISSANCE BEGIN IN NORTHERN ITALY?

Trade from the Crusades made northern Italy rich. New ideas were learned. Wealthy Italian merchants invested in art.

The merchants dominated politics. The Medici family dominated Florentine politics for almost 100 years. THE MERCHANT CLASS

CLASSICAL HERITAGE Scholars were inspired by legacy of Ancient Rome and Greece. Muslims, Byzantines, and Monasteries had preserved the classics.

WHAT WERE THE VALUES AND IDEALS OF THE RENAISSANCE?

RENAISSANCE VALUES Humanism emphasized the importance of the individual and his/her potential.

CASTIGLIONE Wrote The Courtier which described the Ideal Man & Ideal Woman

THE IDEAL RENAISSANCE MAN AND WOMAN The ideal Renaissance woman should have knowledge of the classics and her charm & beauty should inspire art. The ideal or universal man should excel in many fields.

PATRONS OF THE ARTS Wealthy families and the Popes supported artists to demonstrate their own importance.

THE RENAISSANCE REVOLUTIONIZES ART Artists used a realistic style copied from classical art. Donatello used natural postures and expressions. Donatello created the first free-standing bronze statues since the Classical Age.

Masaccio rediscovered the concept of perspective. His fresco paintings have the illusion of depth. Masaccio is considered the father of modern painting.

Michelangelo glorified the human body in his David, painted the Sistine Chapel, and designed the dome of St. Peter’s in Rome.

Raphael blended classical themes with Renaissance achievements. He painted the School of Athens in the Vatican. The fresco depicts Alexander the Great, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Epicurus, Pythagoras, Euclid, and Potlemy.
