As you know Greece and Rome became weak and education took a backseat to religion (the unifying force during feudalism). Your kings maybe mean and You maybe attached to the Land like a slave, but have No fear the church is here, FOR ALL OF YOU!

It wasn’t until the 1500’s that the first step away from the church was taken.

Thinkers stopped worrying about religion and instead focused on... THEMSELVES!! The Renaissance ideal was the person with talent in many fields. Thinkers stopped worrying about religion and instead focused on... THEMSELVES!! The Renaissance ideal was the person with talent in many fields.

Today’s Renaissance Man

Before the Renaissance, people mainly studied religions and tried to find answers to religious questions. During the Renaissance they changed this mindset and the new way of thinking was named Humanism. People started to study Rome and Greece and other things of this world, rather then the Bible and other religious teachings. Petrarch Wrote sonnets in Italian and Latin A sonnet is a lyric poem of fourteen lines, following one or another of several set rhyme- schemes.

Machiavelli’s - The Prince  An early modern treatise on government  Supported absolute power of the ruler  Maintains that the end justifies the means  Advises that one should do good if possible, but do evil when necessary  An early modern treatise on government  Supported absolute power of the ruler  Maintains that the end justifies the means  Advises that one should do good if possible, but do evil when necessary

AIDS is a communicable disease that kills... Approximately 8,500 people die of AIDS every day 13,500 people catch the disease everyday AIDS is the 4th leading cause of death globally Currently about 39.4 million people are living with AIDS

According to Machiavelli If we want to rid the world of AIDS we must kill everyone living with the disease so that it cannot spread any farther. A world without AIDS... Would the ends justify the means?

What if your mother had AIDS would you still support the killing of people with AIDS?

Some examples of people who read and followed Machiavelli’s Prince

Northern Renaissance writers Erasmus— The Praise of Folly (1511) “The church is full of fools. Its founders were enemies of learning. Zealous Christians are notorious fools. The ultimate happiness sought by Christians is a kind of madness.” Sir Thomas More Utopia (1516)
