Words to Look For Scramble for Africa Imperialism Raw Materials Inferior Prejudice Some of these words are the reading for today, not in your notes.

Europe & Africa Even after the slave trade ended, Europe was still interested in Africa. Why? RESOURCES!

Europe took Advantage of Africa European powers competed for land as a source of power and prestige. Controlling African lands was an opportunity for Europeans to get more land and thus more power and prestige.

Why Africa was valuable for Europe? African lands also represented a source of raw material and natural resources that could be used to make Europe wealthy.

What is the Scramble for Africa? The “Scramble for Africa” was when European nations rushed to take over parts of Africa because of the resources available. European powers met in Berlin, Germany to divide the land and make agreements prior to the scramble in order to avoid war with other imperial powers.

What is imperialism? Imperialism is the ideas and action of extending a country’s power by controlling weaker countries politically and economically. This is how Europe controlled Africa for decades.

Let’s Read More!

Exit Ticket Which of the following best defines imperialism? The action of one country controlling another country politically and economically. One country allowing another weaker country to fully govern itself. One country trying to create a new government. One country creating a political and military alliance with a weaker country.
