Animals including Humans Year 6 Lesson 2 LI: To identify and name circulatory system and its function.

Double circulatory system Input Double circulatory system What does this term mean? Ask the children what this term means. If they are stuck, break the term up to help them.

What is a double circulatory system? A double circulatory system has two cycles that work together to keep us alive. Systemic system (left) Pulmonary system (right) The systemic circulatory system carries the oxygenated blood (blood with oxygen) from the lungs to the heart where it is pumped to the rest of the body. The pulmonary circulatory system carries deoxygenated blood (blood without oxygen) from the body to the heart where is pumped back to the lungs to get oxygen.

Drama Lungs Heart Body Set out 3 pieces of sugar paper labelled heart, lungs and body. A path has to be laid out from the heart to the lungs, the lungs to the heart, the heart to the body and the body to the heart. A child, holding a blue piece of paper, walks the route from the body to the heart, heart to lungs (where they pick up a red piece of paper) then walk from the lungs to the heart then to the body where they pick up a blue piece of paper to be repeated. This could be extended to include more children to show more blood cells.

The Circulatory System Using what you have learnt in the drama, talk your partner through what this diagram shows

Activity Colour in the double circulatory system to show where oxygenated and deoxygenated blood is found. Label the systems either systematic or pulmonary.

Activity Now write a paragraph explaining the two different systems answering these questions: What are the two systems called? Why do we have two? Where are the two systems found in the body? What type of blood do the systems carry? What route around the body do the systems take?

Plenary William Harvey was the first scientist to describe the circulatory system where the blood was pumped to the brain and the body by the heart. Before William Harvey, scientists thought the blood just flowed randomly around the body.
