Tools for Manure Management Records For: Animal Units For: 300 or more A. U.

In your packet you will find:  Manure sampling & analysis guidance  Certified Manure Testing Laboratories  Land Application of Manure: Minimum State Requirements (check with your local County Feedlot Officer to see if your county has any additional requirements).  Operation and Management Guidance We will not be going thru any of the above listed documents – it is only included in your packet for reference.

Tips, tools and tricks:  FIRST: Please check the outside label of your blue folder to make sure you have the right documents for your feedlot size.  Those 100 – 299 animal units  Those 300 animal units or more  Those with less than 100 animals – you do not have to do record keeping – keep smiling

Animal Units: What do you need to do?  Manure testing: YES. Manure from all storage areas holding more than 100 animal units must be tested for nitrogen and phosphorus: at least once every 4 years; OR more frequently if management changes that could lead to varying nutrient content.

Animal Units: What do you need to do?  Soil testing: NO: not required  Manure Management Plans:  NO, not generally -  - unless the feedlot is required to obtain an interim permit, NPDES or SDS permit.

Animal Units: What do you need to do?  Record Keeping: YES  Records must be kept of manure nutrient test results;  All information needed to take credit for nitrogen that becomes available to the crops during the current and future years from manure additions;  NOTE: More detailed records are needed when applying manure in drinking water management supply areas (DWSMA) or where the aquifer is designated vulnerable.  DWSMA website: o/default.cfm

300 or more animal units: What do you need to do?  Manure testing: YES. Manure from all storage areas must be tested annually for nitrogen and phosphorus for the first three years; and then at least once every four years thereafter OR more frequently if management changes that could lead to varying nutrient content.

300 or more animal units: What do you need to do?  Soil testing: YES  Soil phosphorus testing is required at least once every four years on fields receiving manure.  Manure Management Plans (MMP): YES  MMP must be completed when submitting a permit application.  MMP are required for feedlots when manure is not being applied by either a commercial waste technician (CAWT) or a certified private manure applicator.

300 or more animal units: What do you need to do?  Record Keeping: YES  Records must be kept of:  manure nutrient test results;  Field locations;  Rates of application;  Dates  Available nutrients from manure and fertilizer;  Soil test results.

The MPCA has created forms for your record keeping along with instructions.  You have a copy provided in your packet along with the corresponding instructions.  links/feedlot-nutrient-and-manure- management links/feedlot-nutrient-and-manure- management  See: Recordkeeping forms and instructions (for land application)

Lets start with AU 300 AU + please follow along – you will have this same information in your records

Fill out the top part of your record keeping document

Notice the colors of the columns in the lower 2/3 of the document – note the colors of the labels in your packet coordinate with these columns.

Add stickers to your map You might want to consider saving this as your master copy. Then you can just print off a copy of the master each time you apply manure to this field – then fill in the pertinent information.

Fill in the information and attach manure test results: your done!

300+ Animal Units – more info needed – place corresponding stickers on map & fill in. Voila Your done!

Keep your record on file  The feedlot officer will be requesting copies of your manure records when they complete a compliance inspection of your facility.  Records must be kept on-hand for the 3 most recent years OR:  6-years at any site that applies manure within 300 feet of lakes, streams, intermittent streams, drainage ditches that are not protected by berms or DNR protected wetlands.  6-years if you have an NPDES site
