LVS – April 2016

 Refreshing your memory of what you have learnt so far  Checking that you understand what you have learnt  Filling in gaps in your knowledge and understanding  Reorganising information to make it useful for exams  Testing yourself to make use of your learning in exam conditions

 Everyone else is better at exams  No one else is doing any revision yet

 Nothing is impossible!  Be positive  Take responsibility  What is your motivation ?  Share your worries and successes  Ask for help

= FAILURE= SUCCESS  Boring  Frustrating  Worrying  Disorganised  Interesting  Satisfying  Reassuring  Organised

 Allow plenty of time  Draw up your own revision timetable  Organise your files and folders & stationery

 Use colour  Adapt but not too much  How much time for each subject? When?  Short bursts of study  Do something you like before you sit down to revise

 Use colour - link themes & points  Put sticky notes around your room/house  Make the information look interesting - charts & mindmaps with key points  Invent questions – and answer them  Vary the time – have short & longer activities  Take sides – argue for and against  Put it to music! Record your notes

 Start each revision session by reminding yourself why it is important – believe it matters  Taking notes  Summary shapes  Timelines  Mnemonics  Mind Maps  Make yourself a mini booklet  Use revision guides & websites

Which side of your brain do you think you usually use the most? You probably thought left. These are all left- brain skills: writing in words, in lines, in lists, being logical.

 Your brain thinks in colours and pictures  If I say “your house” what pops into your head?  So, if you want to remember something, draw or write it in colour HOUSE

 Visual maps centred around topics.  Better than just notes.  Active involvement in information rather than just copying info as in notes.  Makes use of visual memory.  Can visually see association between topics. Allows more effective organisation.  Gets rid of trivial details – only includes important basic information

It’s normal to get anxious and nervous. You only get nervous about the things that you’ve put effort into. Fight or flight; feeling sick, needing the toilet etc is your body’s way of getting you prepared for a big event.

1. Good revision space 2. Revision timetable – be organised 3. Concentrate on one subject at a time 4. Make notes/Use prompts/sticky notes 5. Use Revision guides & websites 6. Make up questions and answer them 7. Use mnemonics & mind maps 8. Get plenty of sleep and exercise and eat well 9. Leave time for fun 10. Be positive!
