Passage One: “In conclusion, I wish to go to my own words during my trial in 1964, they are as true today as they were then: I have fought against white domination, and I have fought against black domination. I have cherished the ideal of a democratic and free society in which all persons live together in harmony and with equal opportunity. It is an ideal which I hope to live for and to achieve. But, if need be, it is an ideal for which I am prepared to die.” a) How does Nelson Mandela define democracy? Explain. Is this how you define democracy? Why or why not? b) How badly does Nelson Mandela want this for his country? Would you be willing to make a similar sacrifice if you were a black citizen of one of the African countries who fought for independence from colonization? Why or why not?

Friday, February 1, Class: Nelson Mandela was one of the greatest leaders against racist governments in the twentieth century. He has been grouped in the categories of Gandhi and Martin Luther King, as all three men used Civil Disobedience as means to fight against oppression. To help introduce the system of Apartheid in South Africa that Nelson Mandela spent his life fighting to overthrow, we are going to watch a few United Streaming Film Clips on Apartheid. As we do, you should be taking notes in the corresponding Main Idea graphic organizer. Monday, February 4, Class: Ms. Barben is going to begin her Powerpoint on Apartheid and you are to complete the Interactive Notes. You must use a minimum of THREE different methods on the Left Side throughout the notes. You must highlight, star, and add information to the Right Side throughout the notes. You must complete the Lecture Activities Ms. Barben has created within the Powerpoint on the Left Side throughout the notes.

Tuesday, February 5, Class: Ms. Barben is going to finish her Powerpoint and you are to continue doing your Interactive Notes. 7. Homework: Finish the Talking to the Text assignment. It is due the next class period.

Block Day 8. Staple the grade sheet to the Talking to the Text Homework. I WILL BE COLLECTING IT AT THE END OF THE BLOCK AFTER THE GROUP ACTIVITY! 9. Class: Ms. Barben is going to finish her Apartheid Powerpoint and you are going to finish your Interactive Notes.

Block 10. Groups: You will be broken up into small groups. You have the class period to complete this. You will examine the document “Apartheid in Practice” which gives specific laws of Apartheid and you will use your Interactive Notes for examples as well. You will also use United Nations Declaration of Human Rights and create a T-Chart of all the ways that apartheid violated basic human rights while the world did very little for a long time. 11. Homework: Work on your Africa Unit Study Guide. We have one lesson left in the unit.
