Parody and Satire What are they and Why are they misunderstood?

Parody Parody is a work used to mock, comment on, or poke fun at a subject, author, or some other target by means of humorous, satiric, or ironic imitation. Let’s look at some examples.

Airplane  Created in 1980 to spoof Police movies of the 80’s  list.com/a/airplane.html list.com/a/airplane.html  Can you fly this plane and land it? Surely you can’t be serious? I am serious… and don’t call me Shirley.

Austin Powers  Created in 1997 to spoof the James Bond genre.  deo/screenplay/vi / deo/screenplay/vi /  Dr. Evil: Scott, I want you to meet daddy’s nemesis, Austin Powers. Scott: What? Why are you feeding him? Why don’t you just kill him? Dr. Evil: I have an even better idea. I’m going to place him in an easily escapable situation involving an overly elaborate and exotic death.

Young Frankenstein  A 1974 spoof on the Frankenstein legend.  deo/screenplay/vi / deo/screenplay/vi /  Dr. F: Now that brain you gave me. Would you mind telling me whose brain I DID put in? Igor: You won’t be angry? Dr. F: I will NOT be angry. Igor: Abby Someone. Dr. F: Abby Someone who? Igor: Abby Normal. Dr. F: Are you saying that I put an abnormal brain into a seven and a half foot long, fifty-four inch gorilla?

Scary Movie  A 2000 spoof on slasher movies.  m/video/screenplay/ vi / m/video/screenplay/ vi /  All quotes for this movie were too raunchy even for my warped sense of humor.

Remember this…  Parody is a light hearted attempt at mocking – making fun of someone, something.  The key is light hearted. It is meant to make you laugh.  While some parodies can be satirical in content, not all satires can be parodies.

Satire Satire is a literary genre (form) in which human vice, folly, abuse, or shortcomings are held up to censure by means of ridicule, derision, burlesque, irony, or other methods, ideally with the intent to bring about improvement.

The number one key  The most common defining characteristic of satire is it’s strong vein of biting irony and sarcasm.  This irony or sarcasm often professes to love the very thing that the satirist actually wishes to attack.

Blazing Saddles  A 1974 spoof on American western where a corrupt politician hires a black sheriff to ruin a town. Plays on stereotypes of the time.  deo/screenplay/vi / deo/screenplay/vi /  Badges? We don’t need not stinking badges.  What in the wide wide world of sports is going on here?

This is Spinal Tap  This is Spinal Tap, 1984, remains the rockumentary that encapsulates the absurdity of teen obsession with bands, their lifestyles and the demigod status teens attribute to musicians.  deo/screenplay/vi / deo/screenplay/vi /
