1. What are the various containers used for floral arrangements? 2. What are basic mechanics and supplies used in floral design?
Mechanics: All the materials used by a designer for placing and holding flowers.
Anything that holds water. Should add to the appearance of the flower arrangement.
Glass, Glazed Pottery, Wood, Metal Texture should be compatible to the arrangement.
Most important characteristic. Most Common: Vases, Bowls, Pedestals, Baskets Shape of container determines floral design.
Flowers should times the height of container. Container should not be larger than the arrangement.
Color of container should match the flowers. Most common colors: Green, Tan, Brown, Gray, White
Most common material used to hold flowers. Bought in cases of 48 (3”x4”x9”) Soak foam in warm water
4 kinds of adhesive materials are used in the floral business.
Waterproof or Anchor Tape: Secure Oasis in container. Color Green, White, Transparent Stem Wrap or Floral Tape: Waxed stretchy material only sticks to itself. Color Green, White Floral Adhesive Tape: Anchor Pins, Plastic Holder Hot Glue: Melted and used on floral arrangements.
Floral Knives: Cutting stems only. Very fast to use.
Florist Shears: Slow to use on flowers. Mostly used for Wire and Ribbon
Ribbon Shears: Used for cutting ribbon only.
Wire Cutters: Used to cut wire and stems of artificial flowers.
Pruning Shears: Used to cut the stems of woody plants
Wooden Picks: Used in floral arrangements that use dried materials. Colors: Green, Natural Wood
Steel Pick: Attached to the stem of the plant. Makes it easier to stick the material into foam on an arrangement.
Steel Pick Machine: Attach steel pick to stem of plant.
