TACTICAL OFFICER LEADERSHIP

Your success as a leader developer is keyed to your ability in selecting and combining the proper role(s) for the situation. You will be a ROLE MODEL – setting the standard for cadets in all areas. You will be a TEACHER, ADVISOR, and MENTOR – teaching, training, guiding, and providing feedback for each cadet’s growth. You will be a DISCIPLINARIAN – enduring fair and impartial application of the discipline system. Finally, you will be a JUDGE – making an overall evaluation of each cadet’s suitability for leadership positions, promotions, and continued attendance at the Academy.

HIGH STANDARDS High personal standards of conduct, appearance and military professionalism are basic requirements of the Tactical Officer. Establish a desirable role model for cadets to emulate. Do not use profanity in the presence of your cadets. DO NOT HAVE PORNOGRAPHY ON CAMPUS

PRIMARY DUTIES The Tactical Officer’s primary duty is to ensure that Cadet Regulations and school policy are enforced and to develop the leadership potential of each cadet. Inherent in this duty is the responsibility to observe, critique and evaluate cadet along each developmental path ( academic, physical, military and moral-ethical ). Teaching, counseling, inspecting and constantly observing will consume most of your time. Maintain contact with parents by phone, or directly when they are on campus – keep them informed of their son’s progress. This is important in the retention of quality cadets.

TEACH AND CRITIQUE CADET LEADERS −Enforce high standards through the cadet chain of command. This includes instruction, inspection and on-the-spot corrections. −Insuring your company is awake. You should not wake them up, but insure that the cadet company has an appropriate system; then supervise its execution. −Make sure formations are conducted properly. Teach and critique leaders on how they are doing. −Spot-check cadet appearance, especially leaders and follow up for corrective actions.

INSPECT CADETS ROOMS CADET LEADERSHIP SHOULD INSPECT FIRST −Inspect cadet rooms each day between −Post results on the company bulletin board. −Check to insure the company leaders follow-up on results. −Turn in weekly inspection list NLT Friday of each week. −Make sure each cadet in your unit(s) is engaged in an afternoon activity. −No cadet should be sleeping or loitering on campus between 1600 and 1800.

STUDY HALL −Make sure your company is prepared for evening study hall. −Company Commanders should maintain order. −No one other than Company Commanders, Executive Officers, or First Sergeants should be allowed in the hall. −Visiting is not allowed and study passes, approved by the Academic Department or Commandant, is the only valid ways for a cadet to be out of his room during ESH.

TAPS −Check your company at Taps. −Make sure the Taps report is submitted properly by the Company Commander or First Sergeant. When you leave the company at night, you should know that all your cadets are accounted for Cadets will be in their room with lights out, Late lights authorized by the Commandant.

YOU MUST DEVELOP THE CADETS Maintain a system for knowing how your cadets are doing in all of their developmental environments to include: the classroom, on the sports field, activities, and in the company area. Talk to teachers, check homework, get grades from the Academic Department, etc. Stress academic excellence.

DRILL AND CEREMONY The JROTC Department in conjunction with the Military Department should establish what will be taught. Know ahead what drill will be covered; BE PREPARED TO TEACH YOUR CADETS YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR TRAINING YOUR CADETS. You are the primary instructor for your unit during this period. The JROTC Department will establish competitions between units. Disorganized drill periods are boring and wasteful.

CLOTHING INVENTORY Conduct periodic clothing inventory to make sure each cadet has his OWN CLOTHES. (WEEKLY) Issue uniforms and other clothing Ensure cadets do not have someone else’s CLOTHING. Make sure your cadets are counting and recording their laundry count out and in, and Squad Leaders are supervising. Make sure prompt action is taken to correct shortages through supply.

DINING HALL PROCEDURES −Monitor dining hall procedures. −Cadet table manners need improvement. −Also, cadets can eat all they want, but eat all they take – −do not allow food to be wasted. −Dining hall seats will be assigned so that Squad Leaders and Platoon Sergeants are eating with their assigned cadets.

FULL ATTENTION TO CADETS These items certainly are not an all inclusive list of responsibilities, but it does cover many of the most important. Additionally, each Tactical Officer will be given an area of cadet recreation for which he is responsible. These are primarily weekend activities, but not in every case. You must give these your full attention to insure that cadets enjoy the LWMA experience

COUNSELING – COMPLETE THE FIRST MONDAY OF EACH MONTH The Tactical Officer will counsel each cadet formally a minimum of once per month. ALL Cadets of concern will receive, as a minimum, monthly counseling. Tactical Officers will use Cadet Counseling Forms to record the sessions. These will be kept on file by the Tactical Officer for the current school year.

CADET & NCO OF THE MONTH BOARD EACH COMPANY WILL BE REQUIRED TO SEND A MIMINUM OF TWO CADETS FOR EACH OF THE ABOVE BOARDS. TACS ARE REQUIRED TO ENSURE CADETS ARE PREPARED FOR THE BOARDS. CADET LEADERSHIP WILL BE AN IMPORTANT PART OF THE MONTHLY BOARDS.

YOU ARE THE KEY As a Tactical Officer, You are responsible for what happens in the company and the individual development of your cadets. You are the KEY to ensuring each of our cadets reaches his full potential. The primary duty of every Tactical Officer is individual leader development…make winners!
