Historiography ‘History is an argument without end.’ (Peter Geyl)

Historiography is the study of the way history is and has been written. In a broad sense, historiography refers to the methodology and practices of writing history.

On the next few slides, there are some well known quotations about the nature of history. Do you find the quotations convincing?

Historiography 'History can be well written only in a free country.' (Voltaire)

Historiography 'The victor will never be asked if he told the truth.' (Adolf Hitler)

Historiography 'We learn from history that man can never learn anything from history.’ (Hegel)

Historiography ‘History is merely a list of surprises. It can only prepare us to be surprised yet again.’ (Kurt Vonnegut)

Historiography ‘The man who sees both sides of a question is a man who sees absolutely nothing at all.’ (Oscar Wilde)

Historiography 'History does not repeat itself. Historians repeat each other.' (Arthur Balfour)
