Presentation transcript:

“The initial radio report is probably one of the most important communications we transmit throughout an entire incident”. Alan Brunacini

The Initial Radio Report must include: - Clear Alarm, announce your arrival on the scene - Building/area description - Describe the problem - Action being taken – Initial I.A.P. - Assuming and Naming of Command - Conduct a Declaration of the Strategy

Clear Alarm Clearing the Alarm does 2 things for the 1 st arriving Unit “Snopac from Engine 71” 1. It insures that the initial radio report is given on the proper radio channel 2. It alerts all the other responders that you have arrived on-scene and are ready to transmit your initial radio report Once Dispatch has cleared you…begin the initial report with… E-71 is on the scene of:

Building Description The building description falls into 3 basic categories 1. Size 2. Height 3. Occupancy Type

Building Description Size Small Medium Large Huge or Mega Small Medium Large Huge or Mega

Height Use the number of STORIES to describe the above grade height of a structure Building Description

Occupancy Type 6 major/basic occupancy types Residential Multi-Unit Residential Strip Malls Commercial/Industrial Institutional Public Assembly

Occupancy Type What do we call a single family residence? House

Occupancy Type What do we call a Multi-Unit Residential? Apartments Town Houses Multi-Family

Occupancy Type Public Assembly Describe the Size, Height and the specific public assembly use: School, Church, Bar, Restaurant, Hotel, Movie Theater, Office(s), Etc. Occupancy Type Commercial Usually stand alone, Medium to Mega sized. Used for the manufacturing, distribution or storage of goods/materials

Describing the problem There are 4 standard narratives To describe fire conditions: There are 4 standard narratives To describe fire conditions: Nothing Showing Light Smoke Showing Working Fire Defensive Fire Conditions

Describing the problem The Location of the problem should also be identified in the Initial Report: What floor is the problem located For larger structures – what side For Apt’s or Strips – middle or end Huge part of the safety system is knowing and announcing the location of the fire prior to entry

Directional Designations All Directional Transmissions will be Stated As: Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Alpha Bravo Charlie Delta Please avoid using A, B, C, D Designations

Longer Strips, Rows, & Apt’s Alpha Occupancy Bravo 1 Delta 1 Address side of the structure Bravo 2 Bravo 3 Delta 2 Delta 3 Exposures Main Fire Occupancy Exposures

Initial Incident Action Plan (IAP)

The Initial Arriving IC must describe 3 Items in the Initial IAP: The Tasks of their Unit (unit capable) The Location of those tasks The Objective of the tasks

Initial Incident Action Plan (IAP) Tasks: What are some of the tasks we initially perform??? Establish a water supply Stretch/Advance attack lines Operate Master Stream Device Force Entry Perform Physical Rescue Investigate Denying Entry (Very High Hazard) & Evacuating Triage/Treatment/Extrication

Initial Incident Action Plan (IAP) Location of the tasks: What floor will you operate on What side will you make entry on What occupancy/exposure will you operate in What side will you operate on (Defensive)

Initial Incident Action Plan (IAP) Task Objectives Search/Rescue = Nothing Found Extension = Loss Stopped Fire Control = Under Control The Objectives of fireground tasks should center around the completion of the tactical priorities:

Conduct a 360

Establish & Properly Name Command

Declaration of the Incident Strategy: Offensive or Defensive Declaration of the Incident Strategy: Offensive or Defensive

Putting It All Together Putting It All Together

Review the next slide for an example of an IRR for the above scenario.

“Snopac from Engine 71” Engine 71 is on scene of a small 2 story house with a working fire on floor 2, We have a water supply, stretching an attack line to floor 2 for fire control and primary search, Conducting a 360, Establishing Main Street Command, We are in the Offensive Strategy Engine 71 is on scene of a small 2 story house with a working fire on floor 2, We have a water supply, stretching an attack line to floor 2 for fire control and primary search, Conducting a 360, Establishing Main Street Command, We are in the Offensive Strategy

Now you practice!

You are the first arriving company…Give your initial radio report.
