Allusion By Sam Saensouk

Definition Allusion is a brief and indirect reference to a person, place, thing or idea of historical, cultural, literary or political significance. Also, allusion doesn’t need to be in detail of the person, place or thing of reference.

4 Types of Allusion A statement that refers to history. Biblical A statement that indirectly referring to the bible without directly mentioning it. Literary A statement that indirectly refers to other well-known literary works. Historical A statement that refers to history. Cultural (pop culture) Association to a person, place or event within a specific community or culture.

“Don’t act like Romeo in front of her, Josh!” Example of Allusion “Don’t act like Romeo in front of her, Josh!” “Romeo” is a reference to Shakespeare's Romeo, a passionate lover of Juliet, in “Romeo and Juliet.”

Example of Allusion “Stop acting like my ex- husband, Josh.” Allusions could refer to common people and places in speech.

Example of Allusion “The rise in poverty will unlock the Pandora’s box of crimes.” This is an allusion to one of Greek Mythology’s origin myth, “Pandora’s box”.

Example of Allusion in Literature “The morning wind forever blows, the poem of creation is uninterrupted; but few are the ears that hear it. Olympus is but the outside of the earth everywhere.” Walden By Thoreau The author alludes Olympus. In Greek mythology, Mt. Olympus was where the gods lived. By comparing the outside world to Mt. Olympus Thoreau is saying that nature holds all the wondrousness of the home of the gods.

Examples of AAllusion in Literature “I was surprised his nose was not growing like Pinocchio’s.” by Carlo Collodi. This refers to the story of Pinocchio, where his nose grew whenever he told a lie.

Allusion Can Make You A Better Reader Helps the reader understand new information such as characters, setting plot, etc. By connecting it with something else. Allows the reader to think about current or previous topics

How Allusion Can Make Better writers Allusion can allow the reader to learn new information with something they already know. Can help the writer with more options to write something different.

To Identify Allusion in Text To identify allusion in text/literature you have to find what the author alludes room something. The use of Allusion is not just in literature. The occurrence of them is really common in our daily speech.
