Platzhalter Bild Design and Performance of a Fully Automatic Robot System for Mass Determination Thomas Fehling, NCSLI–Conference, Orlando/Florida, August 07, 2008

Platzhalter Bild Contents Introduction Modules and Setup The Portal Robot System The build-in Mass Comparators Specifications Measuring results Conclusion

Page 3 Introduction The Robot System was developed in cooperation with competent partners in the field of high accuracy mass determination with the aim to realize a fully automatic robot system for E1 accuracy. Cooperation Agreement with "Technical University of Ilmenau“ “SIOS Messtechnik GmbH” and “Häfner Gewichte”

Page 4 Introduction The basic idea was to develop an automatic system to perform the dissemination of the mass scale without any manual intervention as well as the fast speed calibration of weights or weight sets. The new Robot System CCR is build for use in the following applications: Dissemination of the mass scale of NMIs in the range from 1 kg to 1mg Calibration of weights and weight sets by comparative weighing of the test weight against a reference weight. Calibration of weight samples against a reference weight Calibration of weights with different design and shape like OIML-Class weights as well as ASTM class weights.

Page 5 Introduction New conception to fulfill the above mentioned requirements: unique setup with 2 mass comparators served by one robot unique design of 4 gripper rotation axis, 2 grippers for each mass comparator the 10g weight can be compared on each mass comparator and transferred automatically from one to the other. This concept allows to cover 6 decades from 1mg to 1kg in one unit. A complete E1 dissemination is possible without operator intervention. simultaneous working with both mass comparators depending on the measuring task. use of internal Centermatic-pan at 1kg mass comparator

Page 6 Modules and Setup The CCR Robot-System consists of the main parts: The portal Robot-System with control unit The robot gripping device Magazines and storage for reference weights The build in Mass Comparators The housing and balance support table

Page 7 The Portal Robot System System with 3 linear axes and 1 axis of rotation to handle the weights in the magazine and transfer them to the respective mass comparator. According to the high accuracy mass determinations of OIML-class E1 weights all main axes have to be stable and solid to guarantee reproducible readings from the mass comparators.

Page 8 The Portal Robot System This leads to the following construction: The basic dimensions of the base plate are 1700mm x 900mm. The base plate is made of artificial stone with a thickness of 120mm. The base plate carries the robot system and the magazines for both mass comparators. Each carrier for the mass comparators is separated from the base plate by 4 vertical brackets. These strut on the mass comparator weighing table below the base plate.

Page 9 The Robot Gripping Device The patented 4-gripper system was developed for easy and fast loading of the build in mass comparators. Vertical axis of the portal robot system is equipped with an axis of rotation which keeps two grippers for each mass comparator The grippers are located under an angel of 90 degrees.

Page 10 The Robot Gripping Device Each pair of grippers consists of a single-gripper and a multi-gripper. The multi-gripper is designed to take maximum 4 weights as a sample. The special grippers are designed to take any possible weight shape used for OIML-class weights. The sample weights are loaded on a special magazine place by the single-gripper, before they are taken all together by the second so called multi-gripper.

Page 11 The Magazine Two independent magazines, for each mass comparator one. The 1kg magazine makes available 21 places for weights from 1kg down to 10g. Two additional magazine places are provided to take disk weights up to a diameter of 100mm. Each magazine place is marked for easy loading the weights into centre.

Magazine rotatable During mass determination the outer magazine can be unloaded and loaded without interruption of the mass determination procedure inside the enclosure. For the reference weights a special magazine is build in which provides places. This magazine is accessible through a second door.

Page 13 The Magazine The magazine for the 10g mass comparator provides 39 places for OIML-shape weights like cylindrical or knob-weights as well as for wire and flat weights in the range from 1mg to 500mg. Additional 26 places are provided for reference weights. The transfer of the 10g weight from the 1kg to the 10g mass comparator is realized by a special magazine place which fits for both gripper sizes.

Page 14 The build-in Mass Comparators The 1kg mass comparator is modified from the Sartorius CC1000S-L: Additional automated internal substitution weights for 2 nd decade 100g –10g Automated door of the draftshield Equipped with a special spring based Centermatic-pan 1kg maximum load with a readability of 1µg

Page 15 The build-in Mass Comparators Centermatic pan for 1kg mass comparator: centres the weight or the sample of weights into the centre of gravity of the mass comparators weighing axis to prevent eccentric load error. The centring procedure is part of the control software and can easily be changed on the software control panel. A default value is given which depends on the desired accuracy class of mass determination. Centermatic pan

Page 16 The build-in Mass Comparators The 10g mass comparator is modified from the Sartorius CCE6: modified to be used as a triple range mass comparator. two internal substitution weights of 3.5g electronic weighing range of 3.5g 10g maximum load with a readability of 0,1µg.

Page 17 Specifications of Mass Comparators 1kg-mass comparator: Maximum load for nominal mass is 1002 g. Electrical weighing range is 2 g. Readability is 1 µg. Repeatability is  3 µg (10g…100g) and  8 µg (200g…1kg). 10g-mass comparator: Maximum load for nominal mass is 10 g. Electrical weighing range is 3.5 g. Readability is 0.1 µg. Repeatability is  0.3 µg.

Page 19 Results 10g Mass Comparator: Two 10 g stainless steel E2 grade knob shaped weights have been compared with the following results:

Page 20 Conclusion The new Sartorius CCR Robot system is designed to fulfil high accuracy mass determination in OIML Class E1 as well as for fast speed calibrations with lower OIML- accuracy class weights. The complete weighing range is from 1kg down to 1mg. Dissemination of mass scale can be operated in this range without any user intervention For each Mass Comparator a special rotating double magazine is designed to carry complete weight sets. During mass determination the outer magazine can be unloaded and loaded The weight handler system consists of 2 special weight holders for each Mass Comparator. One of each couple of weight holders is designed to take a sample of up to 4 weights. During mass determination the rotating axis just turns in front of the Mass Comparators weighing chamber to change the weights. This allows quick and easy mass determination procedure. System is fully equipped with control and evaluation Software
