2013 WORKPLACE ROAD SAFETY TOWARDS ZERO THE WESTERN AUSTRALIAN ROAD SAFETY STRATEGY

TOWARDS ZERO The Western Australia Road Safety Strategy The long term vision is of a road transport system where crashes resulting in death and serious injury are virtually eliminated TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

THE SAFE SYSTEM Central to the Safe System is an acknowledgement of our limited ability as humans to tolerate physical force Safe System guiding principles: –need to cater for mistakes –humans are vulnerable to physical force –shared responsibility –forgiving road system –reduced traffic volume leads to fewer crashes TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

OUR PRIORITIES The State’s road safety priorities are: Urban intersections Run-off road crashes, particularly in regional WA Reducing speeding Reducing impaired driving Improving occupant protection and vehicle crash avoidance TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

SAFE SYSTEM CORNERSTONES Through this cornerstone, Towards Zero aims to create a safe system by improving road user behaviour: educating and encouraging road users to comply with the road rules and drive alert and unimpaired gradually introducing new (novice) drivers into the system taking action against those who break the rules promoting the philosophy of ‘shared responsibility ’ SAFE ROAD USE TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

Through this cornerstone, Towards Zero aims to create a safe system by improving road infrastructure to reduce the risk of crashes occurring and the injuries if a crash does occur. Towards Zero will focus on: improving safety at intersections; reducing the risk of run-off-road crashes through sealing shoulders, installing audible edge lines, removing roadside hazards and installing safety barriers; and expanding the Black Spot and Safer Roads Programs. SAFE ROADS AND ROADSIDE TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

Through this cornerstone, Towards Zero aims to ensure speed limits and travel speeds are appropriate for the safety of the road infrastructure by: undertaking speed enforcement and education establishing speed limits according to the features of the road and roadside, vehicle crashworthiness and the known limits of the road user SAFE SPEEDS TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

The speed at impact matters TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

This cornerstone helps create a safe system by improving the safety of the vehicles on the road through: promoting safety features that reduce the likelihood of a crash and the injuries if a crash does occur encouraging consumers and businesses to purchase safer vehicles compulsory purchase of safer vehicles for government fleets SAFE VEHICLES TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

Audi A1 (2010 on) RRP $35,000 Chery J1 (2011) RRP $11,990 Suzuki Swift (2011 on) RRP $16,690 Not all cars in the same class are created equal And, not all safe cars are expensive. TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

Audi A1 (2010 on) RRP $35,000 Chery J1 (2011) RRP $11,990 Suzuki Swift (2011 on) RRP $16,690 Not all cars in the same class are created equal TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy

Ultimately Towards Zero will help reduce the impact of road trauma on all our lives, ensuring a healthier lifestyle for us all. If fully implemented Towards Zero will save 11,000 people from being killed or seriously injured estimated financial cost - of those injuries $6.6b ($600,000/KSI) - to prevent them $2.5b ($230,000/KSI) immeasurable emotional cost to victims and loved ones benefits beyond road safety - free up hospital resources - encourage more active lifestyles - reduce energy consumption - create safer neighbourhoods TOWARDS ZERO – The Western Australian Road Safety Strategy
