How we affect our world

LO: to explain where air pollution comes from to evaluate the danger of polluted air

Starter Do you think this air is clean? Why is it important for us to have clean air to breathe?

Why is breathing important? In the lungs, a gas called oxygen passes from the air into your blood. The oxygen is carried in the blood all round your body. You need oxygen so that you can use the energy in the food you eat. It is the oxygen in the air that helps keep you alive.

Air we breathe We all need air to breathe and to live. Animals also need air to breathe and to live. If there are high levels of air pollution, the air we breathe can cause harm to us and to other creatures that breathe it.

Think: Where does air pollution come from?

Where does air pollution come from? Write in the boxes using words from the word bank.

We can measure air pollution. Some environmental scientists work in air pollution monitoring stations like this one:

What do you think people should do when air pollution is too high and warnings are given? How can they protect themselves? For example: When the warnings are given, we should not go out to exercise.

What can we do to reduce air pollution? Look at these pictures. Talk about your ideas.

What can we do to reduce air pollution? Match the polluter with the suggestion: Polluters Suggestions
