Personal Objectives Use tutoring sessions to aid in English skills Identify whether or not these lessons are aiding the peacemaking process Stay in touch with tutee to collect, assess, and reflect upon longitudinal data Tutoring an Afghan Student In the spring semester of 2015, the opportunity to tutor a student in Afghanistan to assist their understanding of the English language through the Pax Populi program was presented to the HONR Beyond Afghanistan course. This program was provided through Applied Ethics, Inc., a nonprofit charitable organization in Massachusetts, USA. Naturally, there was a clear amount of interest among the class to be offered such an interesting opportunity. 11 students opted into this program. The program was for a total of ten weeks and required 1.5 hour sessions of tutoring daily. Anand Balar, Honors College Dr. Elizabeth Brite, Honors College METHODOLOGY 1.Pax Populi partners up the Purdue students with a student in Afghanistan 2.The coordinator will determine a time that works best for both students to begin Skype video chat sessions 3.The way my tutee and I went about tutoring was structuring our sessions around an “end of the ten week assignment” – a business professional address to discuss a problem and solution – using proper grammar and spelling. 4.Use Skype service to video chat and text chat with tutee. 5.Final project ends up being assessment to gauge success of tutoring sessions. Colors Why use the same old MS color palates? HONR Beyond Afghanistan REFLECTION & CONCLUSION My tutee and I still stay in touch and we have a better understanding of what our roles in society are. My tutee has gained great English writing and speaking skills. In the bottom image, my tutee is able to write to me that I am lucky and privileged enough to live in a safe country. That is something that takes higher level English understanding to communicate as well as he did. IMPACTS My tutee and I can look at our respective lives in perspective. We can now understand each other and his English communication is significantly better than before. He can write an and communicate with English speakers in a business setting. This can go far in helping him in a career. He plans to apply for a Visa to go to Canada and visit some family that lives there.
